Santa Clara narrowly wins set 4 over LMU for the match. 8 blocks for Odom. Thanks for the updates. I think Odom needs something like 4 more blocks in the final match to break the single season block record. Santa Clara and LMU are now tied for 4th in the WCC at 9-8 with LMU facing San Diego and Santa Clara facing Pacific in their final matches. This match should have been interesting for a couple reasons. First one, being that these teams are now tied. Second one, Senior day for Santa Clara celebrated the players that were recruited to SCU by LMU coach Aaron Mansfield. Seniors Alexa Dreyer, Michelle Gajdka, Allison Kantor, Anna McCreadie and Taylor Odom were recognized in a ceremony after the match. Dreyer was a grad transfer, but the other four were Mansfield's recruits. Scores were fairly close considering that SCU hit .305 for the match and LMU hit .150. Santa Clara had 11 blocks to LMU's 1. They are going to miss Odom next year! Edit: Taylor Odom is now just three blocks shy of matching the single-season school record. Odom entered the week leading the NCAA with 1.61 blocks per set and ranking second with 163 total blocks. She now has 176. She already owns Santa Clara's single-season total block record in the rally-scoring era. She has a chance to match or exceed Stacey MacDonough's mark of 179 set in 1988.

It looks like Pepperdine swept San Francisco today, also.

It looks like Pepperdine swept San Francisco today, also. Pepperdine looked great yesterday, their serving was spot on and kept SF on their heels and out of system. Pepperdine is in a groove and as I stated at the beginning of the season, could make some noise come tournament time. Can't wait to watch the game against BYU in Provo Tuesday, predicting a Pepperdine win in 4. Pulling for the WCC to get that 3rd spot in the tourney.

They are in a good position to take 4th place in conference with a win against Pacific in their final game. LMU needs to beat San Diego to have a chance at that 4th spot, tough road there. Heard that LMU ds Ella Boehle played OH in this match. Were you at the match vbfan003? How did that workout? Line score shows that Culo did play against Santa Clara, guess my intel on her being done for the season was wrong. It will be interesting to see how things go with the tournament selection. Will the committee choose 6 teams from the two mid-major conferences on the west coast? The WCC offers up San Diego, BYU and possibly Pepperdine. The Big West has Hawaii, Cal Poly and UCSB. With UCSB, currently 3rd in the BW, beating San Diego and Pepperdine at the beginning of the season it seems that the BW has the advantage. Cal Poly also beat Pepperdine but the Mustangs lost to Saint Mary's. Pulling for all 6 to get in and a Pepperdine win in Provo would definitely do the trick.

I think trojansc is pretty optimistic on Pepperdine making the tourney, even with a loss to BYU. Beating BYU in Provo on Senior Night is a tall order for any team, though it's doable for Pepperdine if they can find consistency. (ie. I remember noticing that Ahrens hit .000 in one of their last two matches...she seems very hot and cold, and for a player of her size and strength, setting problems are the only answer I can come up with for an explanation.)

Well, there's good and bad news. The good news is: I'm always right on WCC teams -- predicting their at-large status. Never missed! And it seems every single year the WCC always has one, two, or sometimes three teams directly on the bubble as the last out / last in. Bad news: I'm less than half as optimistic as I was last week. A lot of things did NOT go Pepperdine's favor. VCU/Dayton split their last two with each other. South Dakota did not win their conference. Arizona State picked up a big win against Wazzu. The literal worst-case scenario for Bubble teams (not just Pepp) was in the Horizon. We now have three bubble Horizon teams, after the best case scenario would have been just one.

The BYU / Pepperdine match should be a great matchup. Pepperdine has a punchers chance, however BYU will be focused on Senior Day.
USD needs to beat LMU to win the league outright. They should not have too much trouble as Lukes is really on a hot streak, 15 kills against BYU and another 15 last night hitting .750. Froehling and Jacobsen are also playing great, too many weapons for the Lions to handle.
Looks like this is a 3 bid league this year (hopefully Pepperdine gets in). The league is really down this year, last year the conference had 5 tourney teams, hopefully the lower teams can step up next year.

I’m always chiming in about the setting but even now at the end of the season setting is still Pepp’s downfall. All of the hitters percentages are up/down and sets are all over the place. Your right Ahrens should be hitting better she was one of the stronger hitters last year when Sato was there. Maybe they need a lefty oppo. It’s too bad with the talent they have they really could of done better. (I did notice that Ahrens has tied the all time Ace record this past weekend maybe that’s where the focus was at for her this year). Would be nice to have three WCC teams in the tourney a win against BYU would definitely help for Pepp. Guess we will find out soon.

Would be nice to have three WCC teams in the tourney a win against BYU would definitely help for Pepp. Guess we will find out soon. I thought that was a big reason BYU won the first match at Pepperdine. The setting was too inconsistent for Pepperdine. They weren't able to get into a good rhythm because the sets were moving around too much. In particular, I thought Ahrens was more affected than some of the other hitters. I haven't watched them too much since then, but from the little I have seen, I also think their biggest issue is setting, which is unfortunate because they have the weapons otherwise.
I don't think BYU has been impressive at home this season, but since it's also senior night, you'd think that would give them a bit of a lift. Still I have no idea what kind of execution to expect from them. If Pepperdine serves well and keeps their errors down, I also think they have a great chance of winning this match. I have thought for most of this season that BYU is probably around a top 20-30 team, not a top 20 team. They did play better than that for about two weeks of the season, and they surprised me with their performance at Pepperdine, but they've been tweaking their lineup again because they can't find one that is consistently effective.

With this being the final week of competition for the seniors/others graduating, it's time to say goodbye and wish them well as they finish up their college careers. Please let me know if I'm missing anyone or including someone that shouldn't be. EDIT: Added Allison Kantor to Santa Clara per bayarea 's post.

@zazu , RS Jr OH Allison Kantor from Santa Clara was also celebrated on Senior Night, so it sounds like she is done with volleyball.
That's quite a list of excellent players on all the teams that will be lost to graduation next year. Santa Clara (Odom, Dreyer, Kantor), St. Mary's (Parker, Pitts, Young, O'Sullivan) and LMU (Reid, Slattery, Johnson) are losing a ton of offensive production. USF loses their best hitter. BYU loses Lake and Miller...ouch. (But I thought the same thing when Gray graduated, and RJP immediately stepped up.) USD loses the Newsome/Jacobsen combo.

Tonight's match of Gonzaga vs. Portland is to determine who is in last place (vs tied for last place) in the WCC. Kind of grim.
Tomorrow night's showdown of Pepperdine at BYU will be televised on ESPNU, so it's being recorded on Youtube TV for me. Yay. And I assume it's BYU's usually top level production crews, so cameras and announcing should be the best in the WCC.
