Tonight's match of Gonzaga vs. Portland is to determine who is in last place (vs tied for last place) in the WCC. Kind of grim. Tomorrow night's showdown of Pepperdine at BYU will be televised on ESPNU, so it's being recorded on Youtube TV for me. Yay. And I assume it's BYU's usually top level production crews, so cameras and announcing should be the best in the WCC. I don't think it will be BYU announcers for this match.

From what I understand, it's Paul Sunderland and Karch Kiraly. I'm very much looking forward to hearing Karch's thoughts on coaching Lake last summer.

I happened to tune in to the Gonzaga Portland match with Gonzaga up 1-0 (25-23) and Portland up 6-4 in the second set. Apparently I'm some kind of curse, because as soon as I started watching, Portland completely fell apart. Zero serve receive and defense, sets all over the place, hitters swinging right into the block...just a complete mess. Gonzaga ended up taking that set 25-13. Gonzaga has 7 aces, and Portland 0. The third set now has Gonzaga out to a 6-0 lead. I have to think that Portland is just mentally done for the season.
Hmm... the announcer at Gonzaga keeps mentioning that "Jeff Baxter" will likely be calling a time out soon...
TO called at 9-1 Gonzaga.

Last match down 2 sets, fighting for last place and no changes.

Ugh. Gonzaga swept Portland with a 25-13 third set (25-23, 25-13, 25-13).
So, Portland is back all alone in 10th place in the WCC. It's like turning back the clock 6 years.
Obviously the first set was very close, but the two sets I watched, Portland wasn't doing anything well. The block was never well formed and the pin blockers got tooled over and over. Sometimes the middle block wasn't even off the ground. The passing and digging was not there. Setting was erratic. Hoeft finished her final match with 11 kills, I believe...the best of the hitters. She was so potent last season, and pretty much neutralized this season.
Well, lets see if Portland can rise again from the ashes...

Sad to hear how this final match turned out for Portland's seniors. What a dreadful way to end your career, but maybe with all the drama this season, they're just glad it's over at this point.

It looks like the WCC office took Thanksgiving week off and forgot to name a WCC Player of the Week! The website still shows Jacobsen from Nov. 18.

Don't they usually just do one for the last two weeks? All right, smarty pants. They were doing them every week through 2016, and then for the past two years, there has been 9 days between the final two, so you are correct.

I remember a discussion about this last year and assumed they were doing the same thing again this year.

LMU seems to be limping their way (literally) to the finish line, so I'd be surprised if this isn't a San Diego sweep.
BYU is clearly the Pablo favorite over Pepperdine (6700 points + 166 HCA = 6866 points to Pepp's 6200 points.). Plus senior night. Home court advantage points don't mean much for some teams but are probably worth more than that to BYU. But Pepperdine has to be super-motivated...playing for their post-season lives, with noting to lose. Will that be enough to limit the errors and inconsistencies and pull off the upset?
It's not a PTW match, thankfully.
I think Santa Clara over Pacific in 4, and likewise, Saint Mary's over USF in 4.

Appreciate the Portland Gonzaga insights. I follow Portland on IG and their stories are always so fun and upbeat (team bonding pictures while on the road, etc). I wonder what it was really like day in and day out. The official job posting went up for the Univ of Portland head coach...

For anyone who is super familiar with LMU's roster, I see that the 6'2" Bo Culo is playing libero and the 5'9" Boehle is playing OH tonight again. Both have played libero, and Culo came into the program as an OH, so I find that interesting. Unfortunate for LMU to lose Booth after a promising start to her freshman season. (Is she the one sitting in a wheelchair on the sideline? Or maybe that's Shroll.)
