"With important matches coming up against some of Southern California’s best, the Waves, at 11-5 on the season, continue their quest for the program’s third national title. (...)
Three of Pepperdine’s five losses came against the best team in the country: UCLA. (...)
The Waves still have remaining matches against Long Beach State, USC, Cal Poly and Hawaii, all teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation."
FIU is 6-5, those five losses have come to teams ranked in the top five in the country, all of which were close: 2-3 to USC, 1-4 to UCLA, 2-3 to Hawai’i, 2-3 to Pepperdine, 1-4 to USC again. "Hawai’i was a heartbreaker. USC was a heartbreaker. We hate those heartbreakers," said FIU head coach Rita Buck-Crockett.
Aside from the typical serve, dig, block, spike terminology that volleyball has, beach volleyball has some specific verbiage used to describe unique components of the sport.
Tool(ing/ed) to block – when you intentionally hit it off the block to score a point
Joust – when the ball is set tight over the net and both the offensive and defensive players go after the ball
Kong Block – A stuff block with one hand
Side out – To hit the ball to the sand on the first pass after being served by the opponent
Cutty – Attacking the ball (usually softly) in the front corner of the court with top spin
High line – Attacking the ball with a high arc over the blocker and down the sideline
Jumbo (shrimp) – Named after the shape of the ball flight, when the attacker loops the ball over the defender’s head and lands it in the opposite corner of attack
Pokey – Hitting the ball with two of your knuckles
