OMG Nick is useless. Phil roofs to win 15-13 in the third, against a *very* low quality opponent. This is miserable to watch.
Phil needs to reevaluate whether he actually wants to win anything and take action, NOW. Watching Nick attempt to side out against a sub par block is painful. The will was there, the fire was there, but the skill just wasn't, and those are on Phil butter sets. What a waste.
Add me to the Phil/Tri bandwagon, or else men's volleyball in this country has almost no chance of medaling in anything outside a 3* in the near future.

(A pair of legendary teams to be sure) Would anyone care to continue to support the thesis that Phil/Nick are focused and playing hard, but the world and the AVP have just improved?

It's not a matter of will or focus ... Nick just doesn't have the skills to side out anymore.

It's not a matter of will or focus ... Nick just doesn't have the skills to side out anymore. 8 months ago they whipped the Dutch no. 1 and Mol/Sorum 2 months ago they embarrassed Poland 1, brushed Spain aside in 2 games and beat Qatar 30 days ago they went three tough games with Poland 1 Nick sided out well enough to compete with all of those elite teams very recently. He has the skills and he wouldnt even need them against this Thai team. There are only two things that take a team from any of those results to three tough games against a team this bad. 1) Injuries 2) Lack of focus/intensity

Did you watch the match? They were one or two plays away from losing to a team whose best finish was 5th at a 3* And Nick just played at about Hagen Smith's level.

Hagen Smith's level should be plenty good. If Nick is indeed playing at that level than the only two explanations are still the same. Players who are playing at an elite world level, as Phil/Nick were 60 days ago, do not simply fall off a cliff in a couple months.

I think Nick and Phil need to consider diversifying their offense. There are college fives pairs that run a more diverse offense than they do (seriously - watch UCLA's fives). Obviously that super high ball is Nick's favorite set, and they mix in an occasional attack on two by Phil, but there's a reason that teams are running plays to make blockers move and throw off defenders, especially with the massive blockers in the men's game. Phil obviously has the skills to set a variety of plays, so why not work on changing things up to disrupt the defense?

Dalcena going to 3 sets against Thailand worries me. Next up they have SamX2.
USA men all on the same side of the bracket. They’ll all play at 8PM EST tonight.

Until Mol/Sorum it was actually a pretty good draw for Nick/Phil. I think the Thai issue may actually be encouraging because - to me at least - it signals that their issues are mainly mental and thus solveable, as opposed to being solely age and diminishing athleticism (although there is some of that to be sure)

They play similar styles, lots of hard hits
