Hawaii is not in a rebuilding year. They upgraded in every position except setter LOL @ burned I hope Burned misspoke regarding the setters. Hawaii definitely "upgraded" at setter. Bailey is definitely an upgrade over Faith. Faith was a great fit for us and wonderful girl but I doubt she would have started at University of Utah like Bailey did. We upgraded at ALL positions. Our DOVO and volunteer coach may be the only positions where we may be lacking. Both Faith and Puna are still wet behind the ears and will be on the coaching staff for the first time in their lives.

Fullerton added two new Asso. Coaches that bring a lot of experience. Thanks for the news. I read their bios. Coaches Nicole Polster (formerly Long Beach st. setter Nicole Vargas), Nicky Cannon and spencer Fournell seem like good additions to the Fullerton staff. __________
Nicole Polster joined the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff in the spring of 2019 after spending the previous six seasons coaching at Pacific. Polster, formerly Vargas, was charged primarily with the training and preparation of Pacific's setters as well as taking over other administrative duties for the Tigers. Prior to her joining the Tigers, she spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Long Beach State, in 2012. As a four-year starter on the court for the Beach, Polster engineered the 49ers attack from the middle where she posted 4,695 career assists, fourth best in Long Beach State history. Additionally, seh proved herself as an all-around talent as she finished her career 10th all-time with 1,018 digs. As a true freshman, Polster guided the 49ers to the first of four NCAA Touranment appearances during her career at Long Beach State. Throughout her career, she earned three postseason All-Big West awards, including a pair of first team honors. After graduating from Long Beach State in 2009, she then spent two years with the USA national team, and then played professionally with Nantes in France. On the sidelines, Polster coached with Golden West in club volleyball, leading the U16 program, and has also worked in instructional camps for over five years. Her mother, Debbie Green is regarded as one of the greatest American women’s volleyball setters of all time. She was a member of the US National team and won the silver medal at the 1984 Olympics.
__________
Nicky Cannon joins Cal State Fullerton after spending three years as the Assistant Coach in both indoor and beach volleyball at Cypress Community College. In her three years as the Assistant Coach, she helped Nancy Welliver to an indoor and two beach Conference Championships as well as two State Tournament appearances.
Prior to Cypress, Cannon was the Athletic Director and Head Volleyball Coach at Christ Academy High School in Wichita Falls, Texas from 2013-2015. While in Texas, Cannon also co-founded Zone-In Volleyball Academy (ZIVA), where she was the Head Coach for the 14’s and 18’s National Team and Club Director from 2012-2019.
Nicky is also a Bring your Own Parent (BYOP) Program Instructor for the Orange County Region. The BYOP is a program designed by AVCA Hall of Fall Inductee Ruth Nelson, to develop and provide aspiring volleyball players ages 5-11 years old and their parents with a strong foundation of basic volleyball skills, effective and efficient movement patterns and basic volleyball IQ.
She is currently completing her Master’s Degree in Physical Education at Azuza Pacific and resides in La Palma with her husband Jerron and two daughters. __________
Spencer Fournell joins the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff for the 2019-20 season as he enters his ninth year of coaching. He has spent three years at the collegiate level and five years at the club and high school level.
Fournell is currently Coach for Sunshine Volleyball club and just recently led his 18's club team to a Gold at Junior Nationals. He is also very involved with USA Volleyball having been selected to coach at the boys high performance A3 select camp and girls high performance skills camp this summer as well as being in the gym with the Women’s National team as a practice player and help run drills.
He previously coached at Coker College in South Carolina as the Assistant Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Coach playing a pivotal role in recruiting for both programs. He helped the women's team to a 14-17 record making the SAC Conference tournament in school history. One of his players was named to the All-Conference Team. He helped coached the men's team to a 13-10 overall record, a team that included the Coker College Male Athlete of the Year, Independent Volleyball Association Player of the Year, two All-Conference selections, and three IVA All-Tournament Team selections despite only having six players on the roster. His team ranked fourth in aces per set in the entire NCAA. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams were awarded AVCA All-Academic for the 2017-18 year.
Prior to coaching, Fournell earned his Bachelor's degree in sports management from Belmont Abbey College where he was the team captain on the court in his junior and senior years. Before transferring to Belmont Abbey, he started two years as an outside hitter and middle blocker at El Camino College earning Second Team All-Conference in his sophomore year. Fournell was a three-year varsity starter at Redondo Union High School playing middle blocker earning All-Bay League his senior year.

That can be said about any setter,...any player. DeNecochea was 2018 Big West Co-Freshman of the year. Brian Gimmillaro, announcing for ESPN, paid her many compliments for her play as a freshman. Also, commented her future would only make CAL POLY a better team. Not bad to start your sophomore season. DeNecochea still has a long way to go. Just because she got co-freshman of the year doesn't mean she played great. I think a lot of that was being able to set TVW. And I feel they went a lot on what the stats said... not as much as how the player played. I didn't feel she would get co-freshmen of the year. So congrats to her! While she definitely won the setter spot for CP, she still has to keep it, and keep improving. In the games I saw her play, her blocking was not that great, her sets to the middle need work, and some of her decision making need to be improved. Granted she was young and had a lot of pressure on a team that had high expectations, and she did get better as the year went on. Hopefully that trend will continue and CP can grab that 3-peat for the Big West title. I agree that Denecochea has a long way to go. If she did have trouble setting the middle last year, the conference better look out. She set her middle blockers to hitting %s of .328 and .291 and both had all conference honors.I also don't buy the argument that she was good only because she had TVW to set. If you look at any good team with a stud OH you will see that they get set....a lot. Ruddins had 1500 attempts! As for blocking, she was 2nd best blocker statistically of all the setters in the conference behind iosia .56 to .51. It could be argued that she should have been an all conference first teamer.

Certainly Avalon will give Norene a run for her money. If you're talking about DeNecochea, she is nowhere as good as Norene, and nowhere as good as Nelson. When surrounded by the Van Windens, of course even a mediocre setter looks like an All-American. Lets see how she will do this season. "Statistically as a team, Cal Poly was amongst the leaders in multiple categories both in the Big West and nationally last season. The Mustangs ranked first in the Big West in hitting percentage (seventh in the nation), opponent hitting percentage, kills, assists and blocks." You don't do this with a "mediocre" setter. With the addition of Rassmussen, Iosia will be expected to have these kind of results.

TVW increased her hitting % going from an All-Amer senior (Nelson) to a frosh (Denechocea) last year. that is really interesting.
now, there's nothing better for a frosh newbie setter than to have a TVW type player to set to
still, it portends pretty well for Poly to have Denechocea, TVW, and the two MBs back. It's why Poly is probably the favorite
SB, Poly, Hawaii have the be the favorites, and it's not clear that any of those 3 is a prohibitive favorite.
I think there's a pretty substantial drop-off after those 3, I don't see LB, Irvine having as solid top talent as SB/Haw/Poly
we'll see what happens with a lot of new faces.
one thing with the conference is last year there was a lot of setter turnover and were new setters on all the top teams, this year, those teams all have returning setters - so should (operative word is should) make for setters more confortable and maybe better non-conference play than last year

With the addition of Rassmussen, Iosia will be expected to have these kind of results. What I think will be more interesting is that Cal Poly (and a lot of the Big West teams) lose their back court. Cal Poly benefited from TVW, but had solid passers in AVW and Brouker. Good passers make a setter's job significantly easier, and 5 Big West teams lose their starting libero with some also looking to replace passing outside hitters. To me, that will be the struggle for the Big West teams, especially early in the season.

I think Burned was thinking that having Iosia full time for her senior year will be better than it was having her half time as a junior. I think I disagree with Burned though. Natasha Burns and Tita Akiu were 1st team all conference, so we'll have to see how the newcomers pan out. The freshmen middles might have more upside, but how long before it is fully realized? And it's questionable whether anyone Hawaii has now will ever be as good a libero as Tita. Where I think Hawaii has definitely upgraded is at both OHs, opposite, DS and backup setter, as well as overall depth.

Cal Poly and Hawai'i must have been #1 or #2 at the top of every card.
UCSB not unanimous at #3; likely seven cards had them at #3. If so, then they had one card at #4 and one at #6, or two cards at #5.
