If TVW does not play where does Cal Poly rank in the preseason poll? Do they finish last? If TVW was not available this year Poly would be battling UCSB, UCI and LBSU for 2nd place. Not sure where they would end up but they would be in that mix. TVW gives the team the ability to play at the national level. With that said, I am not sure Hawaii is a big cut above the other BW top teams but I give them a nod for now because I believe Rasmussen could be a TVW like player.

If they get another TVW type player, they are set for the next couple years. TVW has really turned this program around.

One thing that will make this season exciting for me are the bus load of all new players coming into the conference. Whether they are freshmen, transfers or players coming off a redshirt year most teams seem to have lots and lots of newcomers that were not available to their team last season. This is one of the biggest infusion of new blood into the Big West that I can remember in the last dozen years. It will be exciting to see which new arrivals end up becoming starters by the time conference play begins. There are plenty of candidates from among the newcomers who can potentially become an impact player for their team.

To sum up the rest of the conference:
Cal Poly has 4 freshmen plus 1 that redshirted last year.
Fullerton has 5 freshmen and 1 new transfer.
Csun doesn't have their roster updated but they did sign 3 freshmen and have 2 transfers listed on VolleyTalk.
Riverside only has 6 players on their roster so I'm assuming they'll bring in like 10+ new players.

They played 4 sets with LMU winning all of them. The scores were 33-31, blow out, blow out, and 16-14.
Last week LBSU lost three starters to injuries and only had one day to practice the new lineup. In any case, wish the team looked better at this point but it is only one week in with a lot of new faces. LMU has a lot of returning players that were key to their successful season last year and we should expect that they gel a lot faster.

Long Beach & LMU playing now. Anyone there? or can report on how it goes would be appreciated LMU and LBSU played 4 games. Set 1 LMU won 33-31, A little bit sloppy, as expected but also some very good play showing what each team may be capable of. Set 2 LMU won 25-17. Set 3 LMU won 25-14. Set 4 LMU won 17-15. Each team played a variety of players and lineups, though LMU seemed to put in more players and mix the lineups up. LBSU relied heavily on Williams who can certainly pound the ball and she played all 6 rotations, her passing is a little sketchy at this early point and LMU seemed to serve to her to avoid Harward, who was solid as usual. Beach middle XUE wasn't a huge factor in the match, got her hands on a few balls and actually had the toughest server for LMU to control. Swesey distributed the ball pretty well though LMU served tough and did keep the beach out of system. Martinez was inconsistent but put the ball down hard a few times and was pretty athletic out there. Freshman Katie Kennedy had some good moments too and looks to have some good potential. LMU looked solid and seems to have pretty good depth. They served aggressive and though they gave up quite a few points on missed serves they never let up, even when the game was on the line. OH Slattery was pretty effective and played the 1st 3 sets, coming out then staying in in what seemed like the LMU plan with most players. Frosh outside Booth was impressive too along with Freshman middle Walters and libero Schroll (sp?). Megan Rice didn't play, had a strained AB so was rested but only as a precaution. The Beach needs to tighten up their play or they will have some difficulty this season. You can see the potential but I don't see the advantage of keeping Williams in at this moment unless they at least use her from the back row now and then, which I can't recall happening.

Does it seem like LMU will go back to the 6-2 with Pritchard and Reid? Good question, it doesn't look that way from today. Reid set games 1 and 3, Pritchard 2 and 4. Even without Rice, LMU looks pretty good at the pins and their only weakness today was when the setter was on the front line. Both LMU setters run a fast offense so it will be interesting to see where they end up but they certainly have options if something isn't working on any given day.

Anyway, back to Big West volleyball.
Besides TVW, who else can score a lot of points for Cal Poly?

I looked it up.
Last year Cal Poly had a total of 1,321 kills.
The Van Winden sisters combined had a total of 746 kills or 56.5% of the team total.
TVW alone had 466 kills (35.3%) and aVW had 280 kills (21.2%).
Third place drops off to MB Meredith Philips with 164 kills (12.4%).
Take away TVW's production and Cal Poly who also has to replace aVW's numbers can't make up the difference even by committee.
