Not sure whether to put this in the movie or doggy section, but whatever, Disney is apparently making a movie on the true story of Togo, the Siberian Husky who was part of the sled dog team that delivered a life-saving serum to Nome Alaska in 1925. He was led by the famous Norwegian musher Leonhard Seppala. Then again it is a Disney movie, so I assume they are going to disneyfied it to some degree:

Balto was also a Siberian Husky and part of this sled dog team. Supposedly Balto is the more famous of the dogs because he was the lead dog for the majority of the trip and lead the last 55 miles to Nome with the Serum. Since Universal already used Balto (Kevin Bacon voice) as the title and lead in there animated version Disney probably decided to use another of the dogs in their non-animated movie.

I cannot watch doggy movies and documentaries, especially the latter because they're so depressing. Just makes me want to cry.

How can you feature Balto in the Disney movie when they are focusing on Togo? I mean all the dogs involved with that story are key contributors, but you can only make so many of the dogs heros! The guy riding on the sled was simply that... along for the ride! LOL

That's why he got a like. It was so goofy it got a chuckle, hence a thumbs up.

Balto was also a Siberian Husky and part of this sled dog team. Supposedly Balto is the more famous of the dogs because he was the lead dog for the majority of the trip and lead the last 55 miles to Nome with the Serum. This is almost entirely not correct. I infer from your comment that you are not aware that the serum run was a relay. The serum was passed off from one sled to another to another etc., each of which had a different musher and dog team. The only thing that is correct is that Balto was the lead dog on the team that actually pulled in to Nome. However, the entire trip was over 600 miles long, so Balto's 55 miles was not "the majority of the trip". The leg that Togo led was the longest and most dangerous. There was some bad blood afterward, because Balto and musher Gunnar Kaasen were supposed to be the second-to-last leg of the trip, but when they got to the point where the team that was supposed to be the last leg was waiting, the last team wasn't ready to go. (The musher for that team had assumed the serum transfer had been delayed for the night due to the bad weather.) So Kaasen pressed on to Nome and ended up receiving a hero's welcome. (Some people at the time and all the way to the present day suspect that he deliberately went past the transfer point just so he could have the glory of coming in to Nome with the serum.) Leonhard Seppala and Togo, who had been chosen to do the hardest and most dangerous leg of the relay, were somewhat (but not entirely) ignored by the press. Seppala and Kaasen had been good friends before this, but afterward it's not clear that they ever spoke again. Balto had been neutered and was not used for breeding, but Togo is an ancestor of many of today's working sled dogs, because Seppala was also a well-respected breeder besides being a musher. (Part of the reason why Balto got so much credit was that immediately after the serum delivery, Togo and another dog ran away chasing a reindeer. They weren't around for pictures to be taken of them. Seppala thought he had lost Togo forever, but the two missing dogs showed up again at their kennel about a week later.) Both Balto and Togo were eventually stuffed and mounted after they died.

So my dog scared the begeezus out of my neighbor this morning. Live in an apt building with just two apts per floor, sharing the hallway and elevator. Because no one lived across the way since we moved in 2 years ago I normally let poochie sit out in the hallway while I get his leash and anything else I need to bring to work. Only this morning I heard a lady screaming in fear, I ran outside thinking it’s the cleaning lady but it wasn’t. Poochie does not bite, only jumps on people because he wants to be hugged...bad habit, I know. So she’s screaming bloody murder as I brought poochie back inside, all the while apologizing. Didn’t even know someone moved in, only saw people come in and out to renovate.
Needless to say she complained to management and we got a visit. Wifey explained we didn’t know anyone moved in, and management reminded us to keep poochie on a leash...fair enough.
Fast forward to this evening...the bastards renovated until 10pm. Management rule on renovation is 4-5pm then stop. Guess I’ll have to complain to management tomorrow about our noisy neighbor. 😈

If not, have that email ready!

Several Togo/Balto deranged fans derailed this perfectly awesome Doggy thread. Let's get back on track, shall we? Meet Bear. He is a Koala Bear detector. Once abandoned, Bear now finds bears!

Koala detection dog? Wow! That's a really really specialized field. No wonder he was unemployed for a long time. And thank god he relocated to Australia.
