The attendance in LA is a reflection of the sport, not how you grow it. My point is TV is how you reach casual sports fan and convert them. You’re not going to get parents who think their kids should play volleyball or young kids that want to play volleyball by getting 10,000 more existing volleyball fans into three matches. Not really that helpful to the cause, unless it created an atmosphere that was media-worthy. Disagree with the 1st sentence; The attendance in LA is a reflection of the just that, the host location, not the popularity of the sport as a whole...or a reflection on how the new CEO is growing the game. Right, like Iowa got more people for a match against Purdue last season.

He took a couple phone calls from parents who wanted the YNT selection process changed so their kid could make the team.

The link to Seattle Times article gives me a 404 error. Link to your response works, and embedded link there got me to source.

Hi from someone who's been lurking here for a few years. I'm from the New Orleans area and I made the trip up to Bossier City for the Sunday games of the qualifiers. Supposedly Sunday's attendance was 4200. I'd say it was more like 2000 people actually there during the USA game. Would there have been more people had the game been held somewhere else? Probably. So why wasn't it? Probably because the host simply wouldn't make enough money, even if they did get 10,000 fans. I don't know exactly how the bidding process worked for this; I dug through the USAV website but couldn't find anything. But any similar sporting event of this stature probably isn't something worthwhile for major cities to pursue. USA Track & Field just had their championships in Des Moines and attendance wasn't great there.
Pursuing these sorts of events is basically just an ego trip for convention & visitors bureaus of small metropolitan areas. Shreveport-Bossier City has gone after a lot of high school events, much to the chagrin of us in southern Louisiana. About 10 years ago they hosted the soccer state championships, even though the soccer programs in southern LA are much stronger than those in the northern half of the state. One year two of the state's powerhouse teams (both from metro New Orleans) played in the championship match in Shreveport. I think I heard that there were about 100 fans there. Bossier City has hosted the LA high school wrestling championships for a few years after the even outgrew its previous home in the New Orleans area. As with soccer, most of the good wrestling programs are in the southern half of the state. The coaches, ADs, and principals got so sick of the tournament being in Bossier City that they voted to have a separate committee decide the location of the tournament.
I did see a lot of kids in attendance, so that's a good sign. It seems that a lot of club teams from around the region drove in to watch some of the games. One thing that a lot of sports need to do is get more youth players involved as fans. I'm a high school teacher. If I asked any of the girls on the school's volleyball team (and they're all club players, too) to name anyone that played for the USA team in the Olympic qualifiers, I'd be surprised if they could name any of them. To be fair, it's the same thing with a lot of other sports. I don't know if anyone on the cross country team could tell me who Emma Coburn or Galen Rupp or Eliud Kipchoge are.

The bidding info is on the FIVB website, not USAV. Minimum attendance needed was 5,000 the last time I looked. So, USAV paid for the privilege of hosting.

If you like surprises, go ahead and ask them. If your school's team is any good, someone on the squad will know a name or two. I guarantee it.

If your school's team is any good They said they live in Louisiana... Well, my school ended the 2018 season ranked higher on Maxpreps than the best team in Iowa, so I guess they're pretty good.

If your school's team is any good They said they live in Louisiana... eff you and your crappy outlook. Louisiana has routinely put a team or two in the national top 25 high school rankings and they did have the gatorade National player of the year last year. If you want to crap on somebody, know your sheet first. Or pick on my state instead. Mississippi is coming up!
