The other solution is for the ref to make the audible score, well, AUDIBLE! Just the flip side of this...how many matches will the ref have to call out the score in a weekend? Perhaps they were just trying to save their voice..

Perhaps they were just trying to save their voice.. I completely concur. Thus the "table, flip cards, etc". A megaphone would received "rolled eyes" from the refs if presented as a solution, less so from the fans who would "now hear the score"....LOL

I’ve seen a few good refs at both Manhattan and Hermosa call out the score and the name of the player who’s serve it is. I also saw a few refs who didn’t realize it was the freeze and gave a point on a side out and the crowd had to shout out that it was the freeze. Another ref didn’t know about the let serve rule during the freeze and a player caught the ball and told them. This was in the quali. How hard is it to say the score and remember the rules!?

Well, it DOES take a while for a fan to coalesce all these new rules into a "SWITCH ON" scenario....I often see the net serve on freeze and have to go "Oh, yeah, no good". But yeah, the ref's do mess up once in a while, but actually rarely, in my observations...Some are audible when they say the score (Let's put it this way, I didn't even know they say the score after every point because it was so frequently inaudible). I get it's a long day, but that doesn't change the needs of the fan trying to watch any particular match....

At the NORCECA qualifier in Hermosa yesterday, in the 3rd place women's match, the down ref would call out which server was up, and the score, loud enough for anyone watching to hear.

Any positive experience with the "score via refs" is anecdotal as I am almost sure there is no W.Edwards Demming "process" to ensure it's done as described above. It's a crap shoot...sometimes you hit 7 and, very often, SNAKE EYES! LOL
