Missouri has been really impressive so far this year. They have weapons at every position. I mean WEAPONS Kayla Caffey is back and she is here to PLAY. I’m not sure how great their new libero is but if she holds up then they could easily be a contender in the SEC especially with Florida and Kentucky playing so inconsistently lately.

They have had a nice start (somewhat surprising) and have played some good solid teams but no one near the caliber of Kentucky or Florida yet. Will know a lot more about their possible ceiling in the next couple of weeks when they go to Waco and play Baylor and Hawaii. Then they turn around and host Kentucky to open SEC play.

I mentioned this on the SEC thread also but I was very impressed with the play of Kylie Deberg at the Dayton tournament last weekend. This team took Michigan to the woodshed and seems well balanced. Baylor and Hawaii will be tougher tests but this squad looks poised to do some damage in the conference.

It’s cool how Baylor, Hawaii, and Missouri are all going into this tournament undefeated. (Assuming they can take care of Boise state today) but I think none of the three are gonna make it out of here undefeated. I bet they all lose at least one.

Baylor and Hawaii will be tougher tests but this squad looks poised to do some damage in the conference. I am a Kylie Deberg fan, and have been since she committed to Hambly's Illinois program while playing high school volleyball in Iowa. Not seeing much chance to start at OH at Illinois until her junior year, she made the choice to transfer. Obviously, it was the right choice for Kylie, and I am very happy for her success at Mizzou. Deberg is a very powerful 6 rotation outside. Her weakness as a freshman at Illinois, and really also last season at Missouri, is that she has tended to be fairly high error. Limit the errors, and she should be All-American. Also noteworthy, is that Kylie has a wicked serve, and puts up an imposing block. What more could Missouri ask for? Finally, I am a fan of Kylie's demeanor on the court and in the huddle. My observation is that she is reserved and unassuming by nature, and that she leads by example. In high school, Kylie's small school Hudson High team won or lost according to how dominant Kylie was in a match. She never let her dominance go to her head. Hudson High rode Kylie's dominance to second place in Iowa's small school state tournament. As I remember, Hudson was not accustomed to advancing so far in state. Whereas, the team that beat them was a fixture in the small school state finals. The town of Hudson is very close to the University of Northern Iowa. How did Coach Bobbi Petersen let Kylie get away? UNI's successful program is built on Iowa players from Iowa high schools around them. I would imagine Coach Christy Johnson-Lynch at Iowa State wooed Kylie as well. And I know for a fact, from visiting with a relative of Kylie's at a U of I volleyball match, that disgraced Iowa volleyball coach Shymansky continued to pursue Kylie after she had verbally committed to Illinois.

Her passing has improved dramatically and she can play defense. She’s definitely top 3 in outside hitters in the SEC

Very impressed with this squad so far. IMO, looks like they may be the team to beat in the SEC right now

It doesn't matter. A few years ago when Mizzou went undefeated in the regular season, I told some Mizzou fans Mizzou would lose to the first middle-of-the-pack Big Ten team they faced in the NCAA tournament. They laughed at me and said that Mizzou was the new Penn State. Mizzou lost in the second round to a Purdue team that finished 7th in the Big Ten.
This Mizzou team is pretty much the same story.

Lol, looking for an opportunity to throw some shade? I doubt any fan honestly thought Mizzou was the next Penn State in volleyball, maybe a couple felt the need to trash talk as you seem to be easily dismissive. Fair enough, your favorite team has the name recognition and the trophies, though no one here was making any boisterous proclamations. As a Mizzou fan, I wouldn't even claim they are on par with Florida, even though Missouri has been SEC champions a couple of times in the past 6 years. Florida is the only SEC team that has shown the ability to consistently go toe-to-toe with the perennial elites and win their fair share. Still, you might forgive some of us for being excited for this current Mizzou team. I certainly look forward to seeing how they stack up against a powerful Baylor and Hawaii team next weekend, in hopes of having a more accurate barometer on just how good they can be.

Good god Lek has got to be my favorite player to watch. Kylie's serve is also amazing. Hoping more games will be available for (replay) viewing. They were young last year and learning to gel with the transfers. They should be very formidable in this year's SEC.

Apparently you don't read TigerBoard.com. There were plenty of Mizzou fans who thought they had the national championship locked up and would easily sweep Penn State that year.

No, I didn't see any of that so I can't say if fans were being delusional or just flapping their gums. Either way, I don't know what then has to do with now.

Watched some pretty decent volleyball today from the Tigers. Then I come on here to catch some VT comments (because they are undefeated after Week 3, and that’s pretty cool in my book) and there’s some PS jokester telling stories from years ago. Relevance? Keep up the good work, Mizzou. Looking forward to more exciting matches. An aside: I wonder how opposing teams like having to defend two very different OH’s—one, tall and powerful who swings close to the net, the other, less tall, athletic (what is Leketor’s vertical anyway?) who often swings from way off the net? Fun-fun-fun. Go, Mizzou!

Happyvalley, seriously you’re threatened by Mizzou playing well. Sure sounds like it, what happened they didn’t recruit your daughter? Did you also conveniently forget when Mizzou upset Big Ten Purdue in the second round of the tournament or beat Kansas. They are loaded this year and I for once am glad to see other teams have success. It’s also great for the naysayers that whined because Josh Taylor and his wife didn’t have the experience to take over this kind of program. I rooting for Mizzou and for the Taylors. Nice to see some new blood in the coaching ranks.
