I guess my memory is going. All I remember is BYU having a really big physical OPP (similar in stature and potency to GGF) during that time. Could've been Patch. Eh well thanks guess that answers that question.

Eh well thanks guess that answers that question. Tim Dobbert was pretty big and physical, too, but not nearly as dynamic as either Patch or Fernandez, and even less likely like to be mistaken for Fernandez. BYU has definitely been fortunate in recent years going from Patch directly to Gabi, they have had the best (arguably) or close to the best opposite in the country for each of the last 5 years (since Patch returned from his mission). I was not following BYU as closely prior to that. Who preceded Patch on the RS for BYU?

Solid player but not the prototypical big physical opposite in the mens game. Before Patch was Rob Stowell who was a physical specimen. BYU should still be calling Cal Baptist and thanking them for disbanding their program and making Gabi available to them.

As mentioned above, Rob Stowell was the opposite before Patch, and he was an absolute beast. I want to say Tuttle started on the right side for his senior year during Stowell's second year of his mission. Jonathan Charette was the opposite before that, but he was a city college transfer and only there for two years. I want to say he played as a junior, redshirted during Stowell's freshman year, and then played his last season during Stowell's first year on his mission.
