I have been talking about this with some of my friends. The facts as I know it, so probably not perfect.
Chaminade was an NAIA school, UVA was #1 and a top team in the all powerful ACC.
Stephen F Austin was picked to finish fourth in the Southland conference, Duke was #1 and a top team in the all powerful ACC.
Chaminade won at home in Hawaii.
SFA won away at Cameron Indoor.
We didn't see the highlight videos of Chaminade winning until much later, we saw the SFA win immediately after it happened, for some it was as it happened.
It can be argued that Chaminade saved the Maui invitational.

Gotta be Chaminade. NAIA schools don't beat good basketball teams, ever. The two NAIA schools that have done so this year beat Montana and Howard. Bottom of the barrel D1 teams. To do that to the #1 team in the country is insane.
Plus, a similar upset already happened this year with Evansville over Kentucky. It's a huge upset to be sure but not historic.
I'd also argue for UMBC over UVA being bigger than either just because of the drubbing they gave them. Upsets are common, destroying the best team in the country during March Madness not so much.

Chaminade was an NAIA school and back then, the gap between NCAA powers and NAIA also-rans was even bigger than it is now. Virginia had 7'4" Ralph Sampson and Othell Wilson, two players who far exceed any players on Duke's team this year. The Chaminade upset of Virginia was way bigger.

It can be argued that Chaminade saved the Maui invitational. Actually, the Maui Invitational began two years later in 1984 but the game fueled the idea of the tournament. That December 1982 upset is the greatest college upset by far. The greatest NCAA D1 tourney upset is UMBC over Virginia. How ironic that UVA made history on both stories -- and on the short end. #16 seed Harvard over #1 Stanford on the ladies D1 side 1998 was not as dramatic because the Cardinal had starters missing due to injuries.

To be fair, Evansville fired their head coach amid title IX violations and lost one of their best players, both in the middle of the season. They were on track to be pretty decent.

The Chaminade win over UVA was a much bigger upset than the Duke game. Virginia had 7'4" Ralph Sampson and Othell Wilson and was a much better team than Duke. SFA was a solid Division I program, albeit a "mid-major". Chaminade was a rag-tag, podunk, NAIA school who was miles away from a D-1 athletic program. The only reason Virginia played the game is that it was a stop over in Hawaii on the way back from playing a couple games in Japan.
