Attention Hawai'i players: It's gonna be 12 F as the high on Wednesday. Good news though: Friday will be mid 30s. AS a former Hawaii resident (when I was a child), I can say without hesitation that 30 F alone is cold as f***. Tonight's low in the South Metro is -2 F, nbd

Just my thoughts. I think it’ll be a close one. Jazz will be trouble for the Wahine because she’s a lot taller than our left sides. Not sure if Robyn will replace Ross with Rasmussen, but probably not. Then again, I thought Frohling at 6’5 would be a lot for Hawaii, but they kept her in check. Jazz also has a tendency to hit cross court, which is where arguably Hawaii’s best defenders are (Choy and Iosia). I’d say they’re pretty even on serve and pass. The middle game will be interesting. I think Stivrins is definitely better than either of Hawaii’s middles, but Schwarzenbach is the weakest threat offensively of the four. Should be interesting to see the middles match up. If Okino has a game like she did against San Diego, that would really boost Hawaii’s chances of winning.
Can’t wait for Friday! Thinking about calling in sick for this haha!

Are there direct flights from Hawaii to the match site?

Are there direct flights from Hawaii to the match site? Nope. Closest would probably be Chicago, as I don't think Milwaukee has any.

I do not believe the weather will play a factor, especially for the Wahine. In fact, if Hanna Hellvig had her way, she would love to move the match outdoors. I believe Hanna Hellvig is the only player in this Regional that has played Snow Volleyball. If I recall correctly Hanna Hellvig mentioned that she loved playing Snow Volleyball.

Hanna Hellvig is from Sweden. She loves snow, not just snow volleyball.

There are actually a ton of interesting match ups. Hellvig vs Lexi is going to be fun. From what I saw, Hawaii almost went exclusively cross court with their pins, Callie/Lauren are going to have their work cut out for them.

Defensively, I think I would want Lexi on Hellvig unless/until Rasmussen comes into the match. I’m debating whether or not I would like Jazz vs BVS or Ross. I think Jazz can definitely shut down Ross, but I feel BVS is more potent and can do more damage. However, BVS seemed to play well when she was in the front row vs Nebraska the two times she hit against them. So I’m wondering whether or not it’s worth trying to shut down the hitter that is harder to defend (with less chance of shutting her down), or to try and shut down the player that would be a bit easier to. Although Ross has looked a lot better recently, I feel she would struggle against Jazz. Of course though anything can happen and both outsides can go off or they can struggle.

knuckles really needs to get better at serve receive because it is atrocious. there is only so much a team could do with a bad first pass.

Traditionally, Hawaii has not done well in the NCAA’s in cold weather cities. They lost the 1996 championship match in Cleveland after Angelica Ljungquist, the 1996 AVCA POY (now Hawaii’s Associate Coach) got sick. Their undefeated 2004 team gout bounced in 5 by Wisconsin in Green Bay, with Jill Odenthal playing the match of a lifetime. The 2005 Wahine team blew a big opportunity to advance to the final four by losing to Missouri in the regional semi finals at University Park. Penn State was upset earlier by Tennessee so Hawaii would have played Tennessee in the regional final but it was not to be. Save Hannah Hellvig, Riley Wagoner, and Tiffany Westerberg, all of Hawaii’s other players are from warm weather climates. Nebraska does have a big advantage going in.
