I attended the Baylor volleyball game against TCU; it also happened to be Senior night. For each senior, Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre offered reflections about the players' gifts and contributions to the program. When he got to senior Shelly Stafford (formerly Fanning) who recently got married, he recommended that she continue to serve Jesus, which makes sense for the Baylor community. What doesn't make sense is that he also said out loud in front of a crowd of young impressionable female fans--many volleyball players-- that Stafford should "SERVE HER HUSBAND." McGuyre believes that Stafford should live her life to "serve her husband." And he's the guy who won Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year. REALLY?? Yes really. I think there is a good chance that he would have said "serve his wife" if he were talking about the husband. That's how good marriages work, by serving each other. REALLY? When did you EVER hear that said to a male athlete on Senior Night? "Serve (obey) your wife"? Not once. NEVER.

This would not be out of character for Ryan.

This troll has four posts and two of them are new threads bashing the Baylor coaching staff. Go away. I WENT TO BAYLOR STUPID SO I CAN SAY WHATEVER I WANT. That coach is embarrasing.

This would not be out of character for Ryan. Post a verifiable quote. I’ve known him for twenty years. He’s a deeply committed evangelical, and they take Ephesians 5:22 seriously. So again, not out of character.

This might be the same person at the HoF lunch I told to get lost. They were rambling on and on about how the AVCA let this guy go up there and proselytize amongst other things. He started on other coaches and other people of faith in general and I wasn't having it. Being the heathen I am, I wasn't bashful about letting this guy know his intolerance was not welcome. I knew he was making a few of our tablemates uncomfortable so I asked him to leave and he found another table to bother. Look it's Baylor, I fully expected McGuyre to go that route with his speech. If this is the same person, I hope they never find a college coaching job because we don't need more ignorant and intolerant loudmouths in our ranks.

McGuyre is hurting women by saying "serve your husband." It's not "intolerance" to suggest that people should critically think about the messages they send to young women.

He may be hurting young women from your POV, and I see what your saying. If you have ever spoken to McGuyre you understand that he believes very strongly in his faith and he wants the best for his athletes in the framework of that faith. To McGuyre and Baylor fans, this was a normal thing to say. For those of us that take the time to understand what that is supposed to mean, what it actually means, and how other people will/have interpret the meaning is a whole different story. Have you spoken to McGuyre about this specific incident and how the phrasing and his word choice could hurt women?

So what type of sauce do you serve with a husband? No sauce... Just a nice Chianti and a side of fava beans.

I've heard a lot of male coaches talk about the importance of their student athletes becoming good husbands and fathers. The bible often uses the term "serve". When did service become a bad thing? If you serve as a volunteer at a homeless shelter, is that a bad thing? Serving shows love and appreciation. It doesn't mean you're weak. Is serving your family by providing financial security a bad thing? Would a male who keeps the house up and takes care of the kids considered less if that's the way he serves his family. Relationships are about serving each other. Nothing demoralizing or negative about it.

why are you guys arguing about a guy's religious beliefs on VT? There's another part of this website for that called Off the Net where you can carry on and on about politics and religion.
Can a MOD please move this to where it belongs?
I get that OP went to Baylor but doesn't share some of the school's religious beliefs. How is that a reason to attempt to ridicule religion?
