Just listened to Part I of the riveting podcast on Sandcast of Sinjin Smith. He mentioned that (as I understood it) in the interview that, due to an Olympic exhibition match in 1992, he was fined $70k and banned from AVP play for some time period. Evidently the players he played against assessed the fine and then played the tour without his presence. This 1992 exhibition was the precursor to the 1996 official debut of Olympic Beach Volleyball. Big Sinjin fan but curious about the other side of this “history”.

It seems as if it would have been beneficial to all playing to have the sport start getting involved in a worldly level, no?

At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, beach volleyball was a "demonstration sport", on it's way to becoming an official "medal sport" in 1996. I don't know why Sinjin Smith was fined (or much else about this), but I know he was a big promoter of the FIVB and getting BVB in the Olympics. The AVP, as far as I can tell, wanted to control BVB, and did not want the rival organization (FIVB) to gain prominence.

They were fined - he and Randy - because they played in an exhibition in Spain (I think thats where it was) for FIVB honchos, the same week that the AVP had an event and they didnt get permission to go. If I remember correctly the exhibition was not at the Olympics At the time I dont think there was much thought of the FIVB gaining prominence I think this was more about having exclusivity. Seemed like a fair thing to punish them for, but the amount was excessive since that was close to half their prize money

Would be interested more on "getting permission" from the AVP; I guess it just got voted on and didn't pass. He took the risk then. The suspension also was arguably worse, so they, the players (or rather AVP) sent a strong message. Not sure that was good/bad relative to "those days", whereas today, things are changing again (people hearalding the AVP and FIVB "not so much" ;-)

So they broke the rules and got punished (maybe excessively).

Next up for me is the Adam Johnson interview one of the guys on the Old School Facebook group did

Would love to hear Donald Sun on Sandcast.

There are a couple old articles in LA Times archives that give more details. I'm on the road or I'd share the links.
The fine was for missing Seal Beach event to play in a different event, much like current AVP contracts. They also were supposedly suspended for Jose Quervo event, but I haven't researched that.

listening to those sandcasts and stories of the 1980 indoor team reminded me of the Movie "Spiker". The sandcasts were much more entertaining but there were vague similarities at points.
