How is it that there are 3 assistant coaches? There isn't. Hunter is an interim assistant while Hildebrand completes his time with USAV. When the Olympics conclude, he'll join Nebraska and Hunter will become a volunteer assistant.

How is it that there are 3 assistant coaches? I'm thinking the answer to your question relates to the timeline. Hildebrand isn't starting at Nebraska until August when the Olympics are finished. In the meantime the coaching staff will consist of Cook, Reyes, and Kelly Hunter in an interim role. Once Hildebrand officially assumes his position, Hunter will transition into the volunteer coaching position. Never more than two assistants at any point in time.

It's not so much the hire, it's the wording of that release and the title of 'associate head coach.' Seems like succession has been discussed (not the HBO show).
I think Cook can probably do what he wants. He's earned it. But....
Nebraska wins the title in Omaha in 2020. The perfect cap to a remarkable career. Perfect time to hang up the clipboard and live the good life. He could probably get his likeness on a "Special John Cook Recipe" flavor of Dorothy Lynch dressing.

He chucked the ball around dramatically. Easy.

Hildebrand needs more time and experience. He gets that now.
Or maybe he just didn’t like the USA position, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Nebraska job paid more.

Tyler loves the Huskers; told his fiance (now Wife) that one day he would coach the Huskers!

Yea but their kid will play at Stanford. Nobody wants to be that close to EPA. He'll stay in Nebraska, where life is good. We'll probably have a men's program by then.

IF Nebraska wins in 2020, he’s not going anywhere. He has promised the 2021 class he will be their coach ... As recently as tonight, I’m told ... Not a surprise if you watched him coach with Tyler in 2017... He has referred to it as his favorite year of coaching ... in addition, his hip replacement a year ago has physically regenerated him. So his renewed health, his admitted love of organizing and teaching during practices, and the overwhelming talent of the 2021 class makes me believe the B1G is stuck with him for at least 3 more years. But all this retirement talk is amusing. 🏐🏐
