I see Brisbane, Australia was selected last week to host the 2032 Summer Olympic Games. To my surprise, they had no rival bid. Did cities just not want the headache? I imagine enthusiasm for a money-losing proposition probably wouldn't be received well mid pandemic. I remember 2024/2028 (announced together) only even had two candidates (Paris and LA) after the other three withdrew their bids.

I was going to type a lengthy, in depth summary as to why hosting the Olympics isn't the best financial decision a city/country can make....but this sums it up more eloquently....(I think what should have been put in bold is - "It was 2006 before Montreal finished paying off its debt from the 1976 games") www.investopedia.com/articles/markets-economy/092416/what-economic-impact-hosting-olympics.asp

The IOC gave them exclusive negotiating rights. This was to reduce costs and make the process "easier".
Qatar, Germany, and hungary were interested until they changed the rules.

I feel like Qatar/UAE/one of the oil-rich countries in the Middle East would do a good job if they so choose.

It was actually announced a few months ago, but officially recently.

I remember 2024/2028 (announced together) only even had two candidates (Paris and LA) after the other three withdrew their bids. In general, a lot of countries (Brazil, Greece, etc.) have found the Olympics not worth the trouble, so that's why there aren't as many bidders as there have been in the past. The Olympics will probably mostly be held in countries like the US, China, the UK, etc., going forward. When Paris and LA were both announced at the same time, I think that may have been unprecedented and was reflective of far diminished lack of interest from other parts of the world.

You knew it was getting bad when the 2022 Winter games came down to either Beijing, China or Almaty, Kazakhstan

And it's not like the IOC has really cared about these things either. One could argue that the IOC mainly only cares about making sure that their athletes don't do any human rights protesting that might possibly upset the big money that pays for the Olympic gravy train.

This is strange if I have my facts correct. The world cup is football/soccer ? Do you how many fans drink and watch the game. There is no alcohol allowed in Qatar.

Heineken is a huge soccer sponsor. They'd find a way.

John Oliver covered this in his tremendous takedown of FIFA.
