That is a little more telling.

I am limited there and would need assistance to those who have access to FIVB or Volley Metrics stats? FIVB posts the match reports which include reception on the Olympics website. But I would take them with a grain of salt

This is a depressing thread 😣 That's not my intention at all. Just looking for areas that I hope we tighten and clean up. I've been very pleased with our game plans and execution in many areas so far. I believe the USA men will advance tomorrow AND will make positive noise in the knockout rounds

Showing service errors broken down by USA's point ranges: 1-10, 11-19, 20+. Keep in mind my tallies could be slightly off but should be close to right.
France (USA won all 3 sets) Set 1: 2, 1, 1 Set 2: 4, 3, 0 Set 3: 0, 3, 3
Russia (USA won set 3) Set 1: 1, 1, 2 Set 2: 2, 4, 4 Set 3: 3, 2, 1 Set 4: 0, 3, 2
Tunisia (USA lost set 2) Set 1: 3, 0, 0 Set 2: 2, 1, 2 Set 3: 1, 3, 1 Set 4: 2, 1, 4
Brazil (USA won set 1) Set 1: 2, 2, 4 Set 2: 2, 2, 1 Set 3: 3, 2, 0 Set 4: 2, 1, 0

Considering there are less possible rallies/points in the 20+ range, but USA is still getting a large % of service errors in that range I think that is a reasonable takeaway.

I really think this boils down to "trying too hard" to be THE GUY at the end of a set to close it out. We don't always need aces!
One thing I noticed about a few of our really successful years is that blocking played a big role in the last few points of several championship matches. Micah consistently comes up with a big block at the end of a match. David Lee clinched World League in 2014. Similar stuff happened in Rio.
One thing about the end of a set for other teams is that they are trying to be THE GUY when the get a set, and I think that has the tendency to lead to getting blocked quite a bit. I would be interested to see point breakdowns by interval that are attributable to blocks. My hunch is that they increase as a share of points at 20+ conditional on getting a serve in. I would be more than happy with a decent float serve to give our guys an opportunity to get a block or dig (we've been great this tournament digging!) because I think nerves hit the other teams too- either by being overly aggressive or by rolling too much.

I'm wondering how often serves that aren't aces lead to getting the opponent out of system and/or unable to sideout immediately. Obviously aces are good and errors are bad, but most serves don't fall into those two categories. If aggressive serves lead to free balls, weak attacks, or a setter with only one option, then errors are okay even if there aren't many aces. On the other hand, if most of the serves are being passed well anyway, then back off a bit to reduce the errors.

Regardless, does USA have the ability to effectively back off a bit without it being a cupcake serve? Actually, I’d be curious which teams in the world are good at that
