College of Charleston got an at-large bid not thaaat long ago. I’m pretty sure they beat a Pressley-led Baylor team that year. But they haven’t been good since. And Charleston Southern is awful. Doesn’t CofC staff have Penn St. connections too? I recall that from when they landed Dorton.

With the recent changes the NCAA adopted re: transfers, I’m hoping the May portal gets pretty spicy Will LOVB have any tv coverage? I mean...NCAA will suffer if so, the "competition" has already started. Can you imagine choosing between a college full of rookies and JULIANN JOHNSON ? Or Marta Bechis ? LOVB will be fun. No one will see any american match whatsoever, though I feel like this sphere of volleyball is about to get pretty saturated but that's where LOVB's big name players come in for sure. def interested to see how that balance turns out in terms of attendance / viewership

Pro volleyball will run into the same issues the WNBA does. The WNBA is not even close to attracting 24 million viewers. The college brands bring something to the table in a way in other sports that’s not functionally similar for football or men’s basketball. But there was a time before television and the Super Bowl when college was still king in football, too. Men’s college basketball was more of a regional sport for the longest time, but even there the NBA didn’t have the kind of reach it currently does until after the Johnson/Bird 80s and then the Jordan phenomenon. I remember watching the 1980 NBA Finals on tape delay. It wasn’t even available live in my area, even with the local team participating.
Pro volleyball in all its incarnations will have work to do. Especially with so many competing products.

Just looked up her resume and I wonder if she’s the only player ever to win conference titles in three different conferences. C of C changed conferences midway through her time there. But with Covid years, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else has.

Especially with so many competing products. This analysis is exactly correct re: the NBA and NCAA men's college basketball games. The NBA was definitely the _inferior_ entertainment product (even though the basketball was superior) for a long time, pretty much until Jordan. I think you're probably right in terms of drawing interest, but the media environment is so different now, if 10 years from now we looked back and it went a different way, it wouldn't shock me.

No one can enter the portal until May, unless they are a walkon correct?

No one can enter the portal until May, unless they are a walkon correct? pretty sure undergrads are limited to May 1-15 and graduates are allowed to enter at any time regardless of scholarship status

And Charleston Southern is awful. 2017. The NCAA bid was even "at large," as they lost the CAA tournament to JMU that season. They were decent in 2018, but have been a .500 or below team since then. Recruiting has been very iffy, relying a lot on the portal.
