Can somebody please set up a separate Stella thread? I thought this was the Minnesota 2024 thread?

Also I know that we've been burned by the transfer portal a lot in the past few years, can we please stop assuming new players are inevitably going to transfer??

My point: as far as any of us knows, thereās an equal likelihood that SS starts over Mel and still transfers in 3 years for a change of scenery, as there is the chance sheād red-shirt and transfer in four, as there is the possibility she plans to stay at Minnesota for 4 or 5 years regardless of what happens during this one season overlap. I think itās a little silly to base what we think a college freshman might do in an scenario based on what we would do in that same scenario. Agreed, hence why it makes sense to play her this year if she can help the team win matches (which I think she can).

Whatās she gonna do - kneecap Mel I could see Cook playing her a full set in one of the early matches, to get her feet wet. I donāt see why it needs to be more complicated than that? You were arguing that the only way to redshirt her would be to not have her dress for any match, because otherwise sheād be getting out on the court. That would break the conditions allowing her to be redshirted. Keegan will not put her on court ā for a match, or a set, or even a single point ā if the agreement/decision to redshirt her has been made. (Exception would be if Mel were injured, but even there I expect Elise would take over unless it was a season-ending injury, fairly early in the season.) Now, here is my final word on the setter situation in 2024. I will do my best to not post any more (not here, not in the MN-Future, nor in some other not-yet-created thread) on this subject: 1) We have two players capable of being the starting setter. 2) Based on the three spring matches, running a 6-2 with these two starting-capable setter is not being considered. 3) Based on the three spring matches, Mel is currently considered the stronger of the two, by the coaching staff. 4) My opinion is that having Stella set part-time in 2024 is wasting a year of eligibility for her. => I think that Keegan and staff will try to get Stella to agree to redshirt, and play four years after the 2024 season. I think you want it to be real, and I think itās a figment of your imagination. No coach should choose to purposely take away a valuable player for a whole season based on hypothetical future reward that isnāt even guaranteed to stay here. I donāt believe the Gophers have done this with any high level recruit post pandemic? They shouldnāt start again, in my opinion.

If she plays in even one set she will only be able to redshirt if it is medical. (The āyou can play during the first X number of matchesā rule - this is only available if the reason youāre out the rest of the season is medical.)

A voice of reason š¤ MN sports fans tend to plan for the worst, which to be fair we often get. I donāt think sheāll leave redshirt or not, and I hope the staff is more willing to shake things up this year. I will never claim to root for Texas but for you and Wenaas I will make an exception (after Sept 2nd) š«”

An insult disguised as a joke is still an insult. And thereās literally no reason to insult Keegan. If you don't think it was a bit amusing, when discussing roster construction, that they at one point had five players listed as opposites, 4 setters, and one middle blocker... I know this is the internet, so somebody needs to be offended and somebody wants to be insulted: I would pin more of the roster situation on Hugh. Roster construction is a multi-year process and Keegan has only been around for what, 15 months? But relax, I am a big Keegan supporter.

You donāt think Schnichels would have ever stepped one foot on the court when Crowl and Grote struggled?? Some players want to save that year of eligibility and take the redshirt if they are down on the depth chart. Itās not unheard of.

Why would Schnichels enroll early and compete in spring if the plan always was to voluntarily redshirt in 2023? Minatee did the same thing and played, even though I donāt think it was anywhere near 1/3rd split with Davis and Awoleye. Why not save her too, then? I thought Schnichels had some kind of injury early? If you can find something definitive showing she voluntarily chose to redshirt 23 from the git go, Iāll concede that point, but Iām guessing that is inside info. I just donāt think in the NIL/free transfer era that voluntarily redshirting top recruits (no medical reason) is a thing anymore, nor should it be. If you happen to never get on the court as a true freshman, fine. But you should be dressed and ready to go every match of the season. SS is nowhere near down on the depth chart. Sheās already the best setter on the team in terms of actual setting (consistency in placement, timing) skill. I agree overall Schaff is better in the other skills.

With the number of touches a setter has in a given set...I can't imagine that setting isn't an overwhelmingly strong factor in deciding playing time. It's not like Stella is 5'4", serves sidearm, and has never contacted a volleyball below shoulder level. Then again, maybe Mel's hands will take a step up this year. Fifth year's the charm?

Per my contact at Gopher Sports... expect an email at 10:00am, "notifying" us of the ability to start purchasing tickets for the Labor Day Weekend matches at FiServ Forum at.. 10am. I am not particularly impressed with how Gopher Athletics shows us that they value our loyalty and support of the team. (Edit/add) Got my tickets. I'm even less impressed with how TicketMaster treats its customers.
