Men's Rankings, Top 9 finishes
OK, have double checked my totals now against acrosstheponds site fivb.12ndr.at/olympic-ranking/men and I think the below is correct. Except ATP's POL2 Top 9 total differs from mine.
For the teams I still consider on the bubble, which in this case is Teams #13 - #25, I'm changing the format to show exactly the 9 finishes used in calculating the Top 9. I consider the teams currently occupying the first 12 spots to have already sewn up their Olympic berth, and not needing any further analysis.
Teams who played Recife // + means improved position, = means stayed put, - means missed opportunity

Biggest winners in Recife:
BRA2, USA3, NOR2 and CAN: All improved their position relative to their competition.
BRA2 increased their lead over BRA3 to almost 1000 points. I think BRA2 have locked in their Paris berth, and the race is over for BRA3... also based on the way BRA3 has played lately... Pedro's Olympic hopes are finished barring injury.
USA3 by finishing 4th has closed the gap to USA2 to a mere 280 points. They've got good momentum, whereas USA2 have to be looking in their rear view mirror. Theo had better bring his sideout up to the level of his block or this could go down to the first week of June.
NOR2 and CAN both got a much needed 5th. Both ooked like they were out of it, but now they've given themselves a fighting chance over the next four Challenge events to get some good finishes in the battle for spot 18. CAN can still qualify via NORCECA, but odds of beating CUB, the way CUB reached the final at Recife, don't look good.
I do not think ENG or CUB are realistically in the race for a Top 18 spot, so while it was a great tournament for both, I don't think either will affect the race we're focusing on here. There just aren't going to be enough opportunities to close over 1000 point deficit, and CHI, AUT2, POL2 and NOR2 aren't going to be sitting on their hands either. CUB is almost a lock for the NORCECA berth anyway.
Biggest losers in Recife:
AUS1, AUS2, FRA1, and CHI.
The first three skipped Recife, and none is safe. AUS1 will be fine if they continue to play at their usual standard going forward into the last six tournaments, and they are playing Saquarema. But AUS2 has also skipped Saquarema, and have only 5 tournaments left in which to improve their Top 12 finishes. That is inexplicable to me that they would not play, unless injury... and if there is injury, I think the'ye done and dusted anyway. So I'm calling it for AUS2... they're not going to qualify via Top 18, and perhaps they're counting on Zone Competition to qualify... but I think AUS3 (Carracher / Nicholaidis) would have the same goal, so that's risky.
FRA1 also did not play, and in fact have not played since last October. I am wondering what is going on there... they will certainly not qualify on Top 18 points by not playing, so perhaps the French federations has chosen them as their WC entry to Paris? But I thought I had read that the French Federation had chosen Bassereau / Lyneel, or was it Aye / Aye? In any case both of those teams are playing Saquarema, and FRA1 isn't. So I think FRA1 is out and done.
CHI played, but was eliminated first round of Q. They don't appear injured, but do appear overmatched down the stretch here where AUT2 and POL2 have closed to within 100 points. Were I a betting man, they're not going to qualify via Top 18. Are they going to have to qualify via the Zone qualifier?
