The band, and some fans, do Ski-U-Mah for the Gopher’s bump, set, spike. Not at all consistently, though. The band, and just a few fans, sometimes do “Shark-Bait-Oohaha” for the opposing team’s attempts. (Also “start-the-bus” but that’s hardly unique/original.) Back when she was playing, a large number of fans would make big “C”s with their arms - a la Y-M-C-A - when CC served. Definitely need to get that Ski-U-Mah chant going back again! I haven’t been to a home match in a long time either, do they still do “point U” after Minny gets a point? I’d also add for Minnesota that “spin your head/spin your tail” chant for Goldy, not specific to volleyball but it’s my favorite 😊 And of course the famous blanket lady, always there getting everyone hyped up! Yes… Gophers still do “Point U!” much to the annoyance of some (which encourages me to continue!) Peps Neuman (The Blanket Lady) is *definitely* an institution — started at Women’s BBall, but she also watches VB, so… It’s an utterly homegrown, simple, honest rallying point. I love it! www.startribune.com/gophers-beloved-blanket-lady-peps-neuman-was-once-a-star-athlete-too/571421212/

One of the Big Ten schools jingles their keys on match point. Hawaii fans carry these tree branches with them, even at away games. West Virginia plays that John Denver WV song after their big games. Delaware State calls out D-S-U on the bump (D), set (S), spike (U) when they have game point. University of Maryland fans scream out the "O" during the national anthem when the Oh say does that Star Spangled Banner yet Wave (I heard it's in honor of the Baltimore Orioles?). Wisconsin and the Jump Around song. Texas fans are always doing the horn sign with their fingers. "Jump Around" is certainly a big deal at Wisconsin football games; and if they play it at VB, it will draw more of a reaction than your average song over the PA, but it isn't any big "traditional" part of a home match.

The Illinois volleyball pep band and our "Spike Squad" student section have a few traditions they lead during every home game, including coordinated dances to the "William Tell Overture" and "Low Brass". And between the second and third sets, the band plays our school's "Three In One", wherein the home crowd sings along and claps in time. Similar to Wisconsin, our team gathers and sings our alma mater song "Hail to the Orange" with the student section and pep band after the match.
My first experience with the Spike Squad was in 2014. Illinois was visiting Nebraska and around 20 SS members were in attendance and made their presence known immediately. Just before the match started, they revealed their identity by taking off their red shirts and proudly displayed their orange Spike Squad shirts while sitting in the front rows of the Nebraska student section. It was hilarious! Of course they were shown to the rafters where Nebraska seats visiting fans. I am not exaggerating when I tell you those 20 kids made FAR more noise than the 500 or so Nebraska students in attendance. I was so impressed I went up to say hi after set two. The next year, I made my first visit to Huff Hall and while waiting to get in, a couple of those same kids saw me and came up to say hello. I had worn a tie-dye hoodie during the match in Lincoln and they remembered me as the tie-dye guy. They even game me an official Spike Squad t-shirt. I've remained friends with a couple of those kids and met one of them prior to a match there a couple years ago. Scored another SS t-shirt as well. I've been to many away matches and I'll say this. When Illinois is good and a big name opponent is in town, the atmosphere at HH is second to none. They are incredibly loud and very well organized. I wish the Nebraska student section were even half as much so. View AttachmentThat's a great photo and I love to hear that about our students being good-natured with opposing fans. The home team color shirt fakeout/switcheroo is a fun caper. I think Purdue is their most frequent target for that op since they're so close by. This 2019 match at Holloway was the first time I was aware of it:
I've gotta try to get to Devaney for a match someday.

Texas: Point Texas after every Texas point. Mo Bamba😂 Just kidding…but seriously. My (very white) middle aged mother shocked an Alabama student by enthusiastically singing along to Mo Bamba during the football game in Tuscaloosa this year

Thanks so much! Likewise, if you make it back to Champaign for another one.

I've been there three times since 2015, part of the Illinois, Northwestern weekend swing for the Huskers. Black Dog bbq? Yummy!!

Kids line the court for high fives from the starters at the introduction at Wisconsin. I don't know if its unique since intros are rarely shown on TV. I think the Badgers’ starting line-up high fives for kids at courtside may be unique to Wisconsin, although once I heard two other Division 1 schools do it. (I don’t know who.) it’s certainly a long-standing tradition, as they were doing it when I first walked in the Field House in 1996.

It's probably for most sports at Illinois, but don't they have someone run to the top of the bleachers as Rocky plays? And there's something with the William Tell Overture, too.

The William Tell dance:
Low Brass dance:
Three-In-One:
Ya know, I've been to maybe half a dozen matches at Huff and don't recall ever seeing any of these? I'm positive I'd have remembered the William Tell one had I seen it.
Also, gotta add my kudos for the Spike Squad--very fun!

Nebraska fans stand and do a slow clap on set point. Though I'm not sure this is exclusive anymore. The Nebraska fight song or "There Is No Place Like Nebraska" has become an audience participation song. Umm... I think "Hail Varsity" is the fight song.

Well next time you're down here, I'm sure you'll be looking out for them! Best viewed from the east stands, with the student section opposite in the southwest section. The William Tell dance is done at least once per match but usually only once, probably because it's so physically demanding ; ). We often get the Low Brass dance twice per match, thrice if the conductor is feeling it. This one is hard to miss with the band members that aren't playing in the song sprinting into and up the aisles of nearby stands and joining in. The other ones are always between Sets 2 and 3 and after the match.
