DC-North Lake gets in-Caldwell is out. The other 3 at-larges went mostly as expected.

The DC North Lake is surprising. Thought there are more qualified teams, like Caldwell, that should have been selected. NL was only ranked twice all season, highest at 13, third in their conference.

Now that the field is set, Eastfield would be the overwhelming favorite. Can anyone upset them? Sandhills ran through Butler pretty easily. Would be a good semifinal matchup. Anyone else? Minn West? Finger Lakes?

How the Numbers Stack Up:
Offense: MN W CTC and Sandhills finished 1, 2 in the nation in Total Kills and Assists; The order was reversed in Total Points
Defense: Sandhills and MN W CTC finished 1, 2 in Total Digs, and 2 and 3 in Total Blocks
Serve/Receive: Finger Lakes, Sandhills and DuPage finished 1, 2, 3 in Service Aces (Underdogs Harrisburg Area and Bunker Hill were tied for 6th, ahead of Century and Raritan Valley. MN W CTC was 24th DuPage finished 2nd in Returns, Sandhill and Owens 7th & 8th DuPage finished tied for 14th in Return Errors,
MN W CTC had 2 players finish in the Top 5 in Hitting Pct. nationally and 2 finish in the top 15 in total kills. DC-Eastfield's T Doiron finished 2nd in Assists/Set (11.24) Where Harrisburg Area and Bunker Hills strong points are are in Service Aces (HACC player finished 2, and 2 Bunker Hill players finished 10 and 11 in service aces.)
So I'd give MN W CTC and Sandhills as the two teams most likely to upset DC-Eastfield (at least on paper)
Psychologically, HACC and Bunker Hill can give their all with the least amount of pressure on them. They can already play the "no one outside of us expected us to get this far anyway," card.

Here we go! Upset predictions - DuPage beats Butler (will call straight sets) and Dallas North Lake beats Fulton-Montgomery (will call 5 sets) In terms of team defense, DC-North Lake to thiis point has produced stronger numbers than Fulton-Montgomery. If that pattern continues to hold there's a good chance you'll bat at least .500. .

First half of bracket done and got the two upsets, not the right scores. Butler went four but the three sets they lost were not close. North Lake dominated. To be honest, I had Finger Lakes in my head when I said it would go 5. Makes me wonder about the DuPage/Finger Lakes match. Was Region 3 weak? I also think North Lake might pull the upset with Minn West. What fun!

I'd say looking at the Region 3 standings after the Top 6, the 7th place squad was .500 overall, then from Teans 10-15 no one higer than .300

Dupage win over Finger Lakes wasn’t super surprising. Didn’t think Minn West would take care of North Lake so easily. Same for Century over Sandhills. Good semifinals matches tomorrow. Hoping Century takes a set. Expect Minn West to win in 3 or 4.

The quarterfinals losers have good matches as well. Sandhills/Owens is a rematch from early in the season, Owens winning in 5. I think Sandhills gets a little revenge and takes it in 5. Finger Lakes/North Lake should be a good one too. Kinda at a loss for this one, but will go with NL in 5

Sandhills went 4, but the three sets they won were very lopsided. NL wins in 5, good match. Ready for the semis

Bunker Hill can go home happy after knocking off ranked Fulton-Montgomery prior to bowing out yesterday, DuPage and Rochester Tech are the only non-ranked teams to make it to the final day of this tournament.

Now that it is over, did a little research on Ranked and district champions. Teams with a heavier sophomore group (more sets played and key players): Eastfield (all of theirs), Century, Sandhills, and Rochester. Teams with a heavier freshman group: Minn West, Finger Lakes, Butler, St. Cloud, and Brookhaven. Owens, Caldwell, Bergen, Raritan Valley had more freshmen with significant sets played and about 50% of key players.
Eastfield rolled through the past two seasons and can't wait to see how they reload. Century, DuPage, Sandhills, Finger Lakes, Fulton-Montgomery, Butler, Owens, Raritan Valley, and Caldwell have all been strong in recent years. Same with the top Dallas schools. Would expect those to stay strong.
