Episode 240, College Volleyball Weekly, Men’s Top 20: John Hawks, UCLA Head CoachIn only the 3rd time in program history the UCLA Men’s Volleyball team named their Head Coach—and they didn’t have to go far from the Bruin family. On October 9th, 2024, the former Loyola Head Coach and former UCLA Assistant Coach under John Speraw, John Hawks steps into the role to continue the Bruin Men’s Volleyball legacy. In his first interview since the announcement last week John sat down with Rob to chat about going through the news of Speraw’s new position at USAV, what that meant for UCLA, the interview/hiring process, and having to say “Goodbye” to the excellent team Hawks assembled n Chicago. NOTE: In the episode, John talks about a recent run in he had with a State Trooper driving the Midwest while potentially being screened for the interest in the position... Great laugh there! iTunes: ow.ly/SC4750TLgMs Spotify: ow.ly/RuRE50TLh1w Podbean: ow.ly/fmue50TLe8lYouTube:

People are so stupid in these interviews, telling the whole world that he was picked before the recruitment was even posted.

People are so stupid in these interviews, telling the whole world that he was picked before the recruitment was even posted. I would think that Speraw was lobbying pretty hard for Hawks or even Taliafero. Stein wouldn't do it because he's paid very well at Texas Beach. Fuerbringer is the Head Coach at the LOVB in Wisconsin. Mike Cox-- not sure if he was in that pool, but I'm sure UCLA reached out to their alumni (including Al Scates) on direction. What candidates do you feel were qualified and available?

It’s about his complete lack of understanding about employment law at a public university.

UCLA should have spent more time and more money to get the best possible coach, because that sure as hell isn’t Hawks. John’s selection is an insult to the incredible legacy that Al Scates built at UCLA, making it the preeminent program in the nation. Hawks is loser, by any definition and unwelcome in the UCLA volleyball community. This is a complete waste of time, with Hawks generating a mediocre record and finally having to be replaced after a few years. Everyone I know is shocked and disappointed by this stupid selection.

My "background" on the faculty side of things can confirm this isn't anything new.

It seems that across all the sports and with faculty at these institutions it's common practices. My "background" on the faculty side of things can confirm this isn't anything new. It clearly happens across all industries. What doesn't always happen is specifically confirming it on on a public podcast (although, Speraw did the exact same thing on his post-appointment interview with St Clair).

I’ll shut up as soon as UCLA Athletics man’s up and admits they not only made a mistake by choosing a loser like Hawks to take over the most preeminent men’s VB program in the nation, but violated University policy by hiring a Head Coach without the intelligence to ever obtain a college degree. Hawks is an insult to Al Scates’ legacy and needs to be unceremoniously dumped. Period.
