VT Players of the Week - Week 11 Fall 2024
-This is a committee of volunteer VT'ers that submit their picks for conference players of the week, freshman of the week, along with national awards. Committee members can submit picks for as few or as many conferences as they like, but I will only include them in the results if 3 or more submitters include that conference to avoid bias. -We need more committee members! I missed the mark on a few of my picks in my Big West and ACC picks this week. Curious. What do you value more in getting your vote? 1. A player having greats stats, but only one match that week. 2. A player having great stats in two matches, but against easy competition. or 3. A player regardless of their teams' total wins for the week, i.e. 1-1 or 0-2, but had phenomenal stats?

It depends! 🤣 no, but really, it depends. I generally favor 2&3 above 1, but sometimes the stats were too good in the 1 match to ignore.

I'd say for me it's a combination of all three. I'd say #2 is lowest on my totem pole though. I tend to create a top 3-5 bucket for each award based on stats. Then I'll see how their team did throughout the week, their level of competition and the number of matches.

A player having great stats in two matches, but against easy competition. or 3. A player regardless of their teams' total wins for the week, i.e. 1-1 or 0-2, but had phenomenal stats? I don't care much about 3. Great stats are great stats and IMO it's just as impressive to do well in a loss as in a win. She was carrying her team and I love when a player keeps fighting (and, by example, encouraging her teammates to do so) even when losing. Like volleyballfan167, I usually list four or five players that (based on the stats posted here) I'm considering for each category, then look at how many matches they played and who they played against. If someone has substantially better stats IMO, I will vote for them no matter how many matches they played or if they played against easy competition. But I do consider those things bc it's much easier to have exceptional stats for one match than two. It's also easier to do well against easy competition so those are pretty equal for me.
Re: posters campaigning for players. Unless it's early in the week and you're posting about truly exceptional stats, don't bother listing stats for one match unless that was the only match the team played that week. I consider it misleading. Either post the player's stats for all the matches or don't post. (Just my opinion but I do think those posts are misleading so not a good look.)
For DPOW, I have trouble comparing digs and blocks. It's easy to pick out the best diggers and best blockers and put them on the list but then what? E.g., is 2 bps better or worse than 5 dps (assuming fairly equal competition)? How do you treat offensive stats of, e.g., a blocker? If they have 2 bps but also 1 ace/set and 4 kps, do you consider that when deciding who should be DPOW or not bc those are offensive stats? Is there any way to consider service receptions as well as digs? What if someone was great in serve receive but has fairly mediocre digs/set? (For me, this is a problem bc I won't know how good most players were in serve receive.)

I am also someone who votes using all three options you listed. It really does vary, case-by-case. I always end up voting for the players from my favorite team.... kidding! Or am I? Of course I am! But also 👀
