What are we gonna do when South Dakota State gets an at-large bid? Their best win is likely to be as good if not better than Stephen F. Austin's last year. Their RPI/KPI might be even better. At least for an at-large spot, I'd rather give it to an SDSU team who didn't have a chance to play their way up vs. a Power 4 team who had plenty of chances to play their way in and couldn't get it done. (Say an Arizona or Auburn type team) We tolerated it when Northern Iowa got a seed and then lost in the first round. Or.. how about we don't give it to South Dakota State and we give it to a Western Kentucky, South Florida, St. John's, Northern Colorado, etc. if we don't want to give it to a P4. South Dakota State right now only has 1 non-conference team scheduled in the top 100. I also guess I don't get the Arizona comment. They played 7 top 25 teams and won twice. Is that horrible for what you'd expect from a bubble team? Arizona also only has 2 losses outside the Top 25. Auburn is a very different case. Auburn had a ton of chances against 'meh' teams. Arizona's situation is actually kind of unfortunate. There are zero teams in their conference currently between #20 Baylor and #75 Kansas State. That's a huge gap. The SEC has 10(!) teams within that range..

None of that happened so… no? If I had a team ranked 17th and they lost I wouldn’t drop them from my top 25. But again, that didn’t happen so I am very confused why you did one of those “start an argument with myself over something that didn’t happen” and then chose to direct it at me. ◡̈ The thing is--how do you know it didn't? SDSU is still receiving votes in the poll and you don't know why. There are all sorts of rational explanations as to why they could still be getting votes.

They chose not to schedule any such matches. Auburn beat Kentucky. Arizona beat Kansas and BYU. They did get it done at a MUCH higher level than SDSU.

Why are we even talking tournament bids in an AVCA rankings thread?
However, I am always a bit reluctant to accept the "they could have scheduled stronger" argument, because scheduling is a dance between multiple partners. Teams can't just play whoever they feel like playing.
More than that, though, if the team did what it needed to do to get a good score in the ranking system that all the teams know is what they are judged on, then they did what they were asked to do.

I understand what you mean now; sorry, I thought you meant actually me, not a general “you” when talking about the rankings LOL. I can understand why they would still get ranked in a few of the poll submissions; but I don’t know that I personally would still be ranking them. I wouldn’t be mad if SDSU getting an at-large bid if they don’t win the tournament. But I do wish they had scheduled a tougher (pre-conference) season.

BYU still being ranked is ridiculous. Can’t wait to see them lose the first weekend of the tournament
