All these covid year player questions deserve an asterisks in my mind. Many have played five full seasons and we are essentially combining two full high school years (2020 and 2021) so the sheer volume of the elite player pool is just bigger. You just can't compare to classes prior to covid. Is this the deepest year of strong senior players? probably....is it the most elite? probably not. On the fundamentals, the graduating setters this year are sub par - other than Wait and Miner, nobody is really that elite. As for the player comparison in general, and in particular the hitters, I've said it before but given how the rules of the game have changed, I think trying to compare players in the past to the players today is a fools errand. We are now playing in a era where doubles are allowed and hitters can lift the ball. You got me thinking: outside hitter is really the only position where there's a glut of strong covid seniors. Maybe libero. All the other positions only have a few notable covid seniors. |
