To the Floridians and Californians making the trek to Omaha. It will be getting milder as the weekend approaches. It's actually supposed to be near or even above freezing Saturday and Sunday. The more I start thinking about it, the more I come to the conclusion that Lee Maes absolutely lost it when he took the Nebraska job. ;D

I'm really glad John Cook was able to get him. It appears our floor defense has improved (especially considering we don't play with a libero) and him working on the serving part of our game has seen dramatic improvements, maybe not in number of service errors, but in the effectiveness of our serving, especially Pavan's. Another thing I noticed is that JC gives him free reign to pretty much do all in-game coaching. Usually it's Maes who is yelling at the players various things during the match, and JC just sits there, grumbling occasionally when they do something wrong. During timeouts it's Maes who does most of the talking. And getting to watch some matches this year from right behind the bench, it's amazing how well Maes knows the opposing team. One time during the Duke game, he yelled at Larson to watch the tip, even before the ball had been set by Duke. They tipped it, Maes saw it all the way, was yelling at Jordan, she covered it, NU won the point, and JC looked over to Maes and gave him a look of "nice job." Maes will make a terrific head coach one day. I just hope that "one day" isn't in the near future.

I'm glad I'm not going. It was 40 this morning and I was freezing. It's really nice right now, low 60's and sunny, but you get below 45 and I'm all bundled up.

Cal head coach Sue Woodstra resigns abruptly before facing Washington. #1 assistant Oscar Crespo resigns along with her. That leaves Lee Maes as interim head coach. Basically it was the year from hell. On their Washington State trip, their bus didn't show and they took about three cabs from Spokane to Pullman. Against Santa Clara, he started with 7 players in uniform. One of those players went out with back pain. They went 3-14 under his tenure, but they didn't completely fall apart under extremely trying circumstances. I don't recall if he had an assistant.

It's great here in State College. Sunny, 26 degrees, although with wind chill it feels like 14.

I know I'm not going to get sympathy from you all, but it is cold tonight (in Hawaii). I don't know what temperature it is but this is definitely a 2 blanket night .

This is definitely the Lee Maes that we all know and love! Great story as well, I've seen that from him many times over (not to mention a couple other NorCal coaches that currently aren't - but should be - coaching in the college ranks).

Great story as well, I've seen that from him many times over (not to mention a couple other NorCal coaches that currently aren't - but should be - coaching in the college ranks). Coaches are like that even when they're not coaching. When [correction] Arizona played at Cal , I started taking pictures from the first row in the ends, and found myself sitting next to Ernesto Cazares, who was Cal's volunteer assistant in 2003 and 2004. Apparently coaches prefer watching from the ends to see blocking spacing or something. He wasn't yelling loud enough for anyone on the floor to hear, but he was calling out for a specific play, and they actually ran it and won the rally. Freaky.

I like sitting at the ends - you can see the defensive alignments, holes in the block, set location, etc... Plus you don't have the up ref blocking your view. Sometimes sitting with coaches can be fun, they point out things you might not have noticed, but sometimes it sucks because some of them don't stop talking during the match.
