I was at this one. Glass more or less singlehandedly kept Uof A in the match. She had 7 kills in the rally game alone. at 14-13 they went to her 9 times in a row and she couldn't get a kill. It looked like it might have helped had they at least pretended to go to someone else or even let Glass hit from some other spot on the court, but....they just went sort of primitive. While she had her moments, the Arizona setter had a rough night.
Santa Clara was very steady all night and kept counter attacking well. with Mcgivern from the left. there seemed to be a hole in the Arizona rightside block much of the evening.

I think what really won it for Santa Clara was its floor defense. It was unbelievable - some of the best I've ever seen. Caroline Walters went above and beyond the call of duty and just saved almost every ball that went her way. She was such a key reason why the Broncos have made it thus far. Brittany Lowe did an awesome job as well. She heated up in the third game and was key in the game three victory. Her defense and passing was very good too. And of course, McGiven was so clutch for Santa Clara, putting ball after ball away in the latter stages of the match.
Congrats to Wallace & Co.

I'm a Stanford fan and have been to all of their home games this season, and in my opinion Santa Clara plays the best defense of any team we played. They're scrappy and extremely tenacious, and it seemed that they played without fear; I can't count the number of times I saw most of the girls chase after tipped balls that most other teams would have just watched fall. They would run and dive into the chairs and signs set up around the court trying to get a loose ball. A big part of this seemed was their libero (Walters, i believe). She's not rediculously fast like USC's or Washington's libero, but I swear she was a human highlight reel; she made tons of spectacular diving digs, and her reactions (to be able to dig hit off of Glass or Abernathy you've gotta be able to move your arms pretty quickly) were first-rate. I really wish Stanford had a libero like her--we'd still be in the tournement right now if we did. On offense, they really got the job done with a very balanced attack. They seem to have been going to McGiven a lot during the tournement (it said on the monitor that before tonight's match last week's game against Stanford was her previous career high in kills with 19), but they sting you by thinking you're going to her or to the middle and then all the sudden setting to someone who you haven't seen in a little while. That Morarti (sp?) had a wicked slide off the right, and whenever they went to her she seemed to be unstoppable. Congratulations and best of luck in the Final Four.

I really wish Stanford had a libero like her... Don't worry, you do and with the graduation of this year's seniors, you'll see a lot more of her over the next few years!

whatever "The ursher nazis weren't patroling like they usually do" The 2 worst things about going to a match at Stanford are being forced to sit next to the band and the usher nazis - I wonder why the NCAA, ha$ not complained about the empty seats when $tanford is not playing.

Dana was among one of the best setters, and now she s married and is playing for a team in Europe. I wish she would go back and play with USA. but we players no how USA volleyball can be. Burkholder is playing with Santeramo in Italy's first division. She is the backup setter there having only played in 9 sets all season. The starter is a Slovack named Alicia Szekelyova. The team doesn' have much and will likely be relegated to the second division at the end of the season.

Along with your All American setter and potential FOY and USA alternate. I'm thinking Stanford may be preseason Top 3 next year. (for the umpteenth time)

.... Wolfgang, where were you and the jujubees? I saw one guy that looked like the unibomber, but no kids or jujubees. That unabomber guy was me. My kids were sitting in the stands opposite from me across the court.

I'm a Stanford season ticket holder too and went to the game to not only support Santa Clara but to support the "host team" idea. It is hard not to covet players from other teams, but you get used to thinking Stanford always gets the best players and then you see a team like Santa Clara and think "boy I hope we didn't get her because of grades and not because we missed her." As someone posted earlier, you never know how someone might turn out. That being said, now that we know how great some of the Santa Clara players are, I hope they get included for National team consideration. I'll bet school bias does get into the National team selection, unfortunately.
Santa Clara is great fun to watch and I think I may buy season tickets to their season as well. And they are 50% cheaper to boot.

Not saying you are wrong about a healthy Fisher, because I have never seen her healthy and play ... but if you are right, then it's only a good thing, because I have been impressed with Fishburn and think she would be phenomenal at libero and wish she had been this year. So if Fisher is even better, then thats great news as well!

So less than 16 hours after Santa Clara makes the final four for the first time, we're talking about Stanford's libero?

Yep.
I really hope so. Fishburn's looked good; one of the few upsides of the injuries was that she got a little more playing time, staying in for more than just the serve. Maybe it was her inexperience at the level, but I feel as though she had a problem with her passing this season; she would often shank passes or let them bounce off of her forearm and out of bounds. Hopefully these are freshman mistakes that she'll iron out in the off-season.
