So less than 16 hours after Santa Clara makes the final four for the first time, we're talking about Stanford's libero? After watching Walters fly and dive all over the court making great digs, any Stanford fan there had to be thinking the same thing. Dunning was in attendance. I would hope he saw the importance of a good libero. I like Fishburn. Hopefully, she'll do well. And by the way, congrats to SCU. As much as I wanted to root for the Pac 10, I had to go with the local broncos. They have most of their team returning next year, except for Cassie Perret, another local product. Walters was at Los Gatos when Katie Ripp was at Stanford. I wonder if Walters was in any kind of consideration of the Stanford staff.

Why do you think Dunning is seemingly so anti-"traditional" libero?

In all honesty, I don't know if I think he is anti libero. I think that he saw Courtney Schultz as an incredible person that worked hard when she came in. I think the nice guy side of Dunning led to some of Dunning sticking with Schultz throughout the years. That being said also I dont think until this year there was anybody to replace her. And I think this year, he wasn't going to yank her after she helped lead them to a national championship last year. Just my thoughts ... he was too nice a guy to a girl that he liked as a person.

I just got back from the game also, and am very impressed again by Matich the Santa Clara setter. I don't see in her bio that she has been on any National teams though. Has she been invited or overlooked? I think she is arguably better than Kehoe of Stanford who does play for one of the junior national teams. Matrich, is a great setter, she played for Cub Empire out of the Bay Area . They have excellent club coaching and the team is always very competitive., I know she did well with her High School team from El Molina as well. Katlin Sather, who is a freshman at UCLA is from that team, along with a host of others. Smart Setter. Probably knows to much for the USA system...

Empire
I agree Match looked great on Saturday night. Something like the last 6 El Molino High School setters have wound up with D1 scholarships btw though Match is the first one to make a final four.
Anna Cymalo the middle on the Santa Clara team who came up with a monster slide at 10-9 in the 5th game.
Kristen Andre, another Empire product, had 19 kills in Tennessee's elite eight match.
this is a breakthrough year for Empire alumni in that 3 former players are in the final 4.
the other odd Empire trifecta is that 3 former coaches from the club are the 3 teams that may have had the best case for being included in the tournament but didn't get in.

Have no idea why I did this, but I wrote up the match in a bit more detail
<a href="http://chancelucky.blogspot.com/2005/12/santa-clara-makes-final-four.html ">link to a non-official writeup of Santa Clara/Arizona match</a>
should you go there, if you click on the right hand column of my de.lic.ious tags under "volleyball", it'll take you to some older volleyball stories as well.
