First of all Nebraskans aren't unlike other fans in that the sport needs to be doing reasonably well. But here is the main reason I feel for the continued and enthusiastic support once the sport proves itself.
We all know about Nebraska not having any pro teams to follow but the main reason I think is the homegrown flavor.
Our third biggest city has approximately 50000 people. So most of our homegrown athletes are coming from small communities.
Houghteling, Busboom, Gates,Larson, and Smith all come from towns with less than 22000 a few with less than 2000. What happens is that when these athletes become "stars" the entire town follows them and treats them as such.
If you checked out the roster of our past NC football teams you would see this also. It has started happening in baseball. In fact our entire starting pitching rotation was from Nebraska. And I see it happening in wrestling. The attendance numbers have gone up and I can't help but noticing how many Nebraskans are on the roster. (This is unusual for the program in the past)
Nebraska is a small state and while you can make fun of our corn, unexciting landscape, cold and whatever, the fact of the matter is that when it comes to Nebraska athletics its a close knit state and thus fuels the success it has.

That's very well put lilred. We are a state that loves its sports. And the Huskers are all we got, pretty much. Apparently there's also a basketball team in Omaha, the Crayton somethings, but I don't give a hoot about them. (My apologies to any Husker volleyball/Creighton basketball fans, but I only bleed Husker red, I'm not one of them half red/half blue guys).
I'll be back at the Qwest tomorrow proudly wearing my Nebraska Basketball shirt.
Go Big Red!

................Nothing else to do in Nebraska. We've already established that. So if you were trying to throw out another Insult Arrow, you missed.

Actually, there have been a couple of minor-league hockey teams in Macon known as the Macon Whoopee (or Whoopees).
The 70s incarnation (Southern Hockey League) was featured in a mid-80s WSJ lead about defunct teams. Somebody had a museum or collected memorabilia or something.
The 90s version played in the CHL, then switched to the (coast to coast) ECHL before moving away and folding. There was another team in for a year or so that played on the homonym, the Macon Traxx.
The games in the Coliseum were fun with mascot Willie the Whooping Crane. The fans made whooping noises to cheer the team. They had $5 college nights now and again. Too bad they didn't have quarter beer then too.

................Nothing else to do in Nebraska. And, apparently, nothing to do in Hawaii, at least for Bik, but to try to lower the level of discourse on volleyball boards. Now that he has all the free time from cheering for his favorite team, who is now idle.

I can't recognize any of the girls in that Nebraska photo. However, I do see some recognizable faces in the stands.
