I can't believe it that it's been that long since Nebraska's been to the Final Four. It's too bad that in 2002 they had to lose to Hawaii, but I remember that year being the year where out of the 5 superb teams, 1 had to be left out of the Final Four...it's just too bad it had to be them. HAHA, but to hear something really ironic, I thought that USC would be that 1 team to be left out.
Also, 2004, they missed it by a nose hair by a GOOD Jeckyl USC team.
Congrats to Nebraska.... I guess this has been sort of like a long-time coming.

Elmer and Pavan are the two facing toward the camera Mr. Wolfy. Life rule #273: Don't be fatuous with someone who's being disingenuous.

It is more than just fan support. It appears as though the media helps by actually covering the team. It helps greatly to have at least the newspapers have more than "news reports" in their coverage.
This year, the main paper in the Twin Cities, the Star Tribune, only had 3 reporter related stories on the MN team and 2 of those came after the team would no longer play at home.
Kudos to Nebraska, Hawaii, and other communities where the media actually pays attention to the program.

Apparently he likes to play with things many others would be unwilling to mention in public.

"And, apparently, nothing to do in Hawaii, at least for Bik, but to try to lower the level of discourse on volleyball boards. Now that he has all the free time from cheering for his favorite team, who is now idle."
Remove everything after the "Now..." and you will have it nailed. ;D

I've always found this quite amusing when it comes to college sport. When a team doesn't draw but does well, people cry "Yeah, you won, but you don't have draw any fans." When a team does well and draw fans, that same person..."What else is there to do in ________." The world may be short of peace, short of oil and short of jobs but it sure as heck not short on entertainment. Most college teams are struggling to draw and 1,000 fans and many of those are in places where there is "nothing to do". When that isn't necessarily the case. These days there's greater entertainment options than ever before, and some people chose a different option. Sports has always been in the realm of entertainment, but even more so now because there's more options..and you don't even need to leave home to exercise them. Rather than denigrate, celebrate. Nebraska fills their building every match. Minnesota draws great crowds, so does Wisconsin. Missouri State draw well..and that can make for a fun weekend, too (See the match, then see a good show in Branson ) I've never understood why people who say they like the sport denigrate others who like and respect just as much.

This year, the main paper in the Twin Cities, the Star Tribune, only had 3 reporter related stories on the MN team and 2 of those came after the team would no longer play at home. Don't exaggerate. There were four articles. Of course, three of them came after the end of the home season. Before the season -- the Strib ran an article to talk about the sports that they weren't going to cover (seriously). Nov 27th - the Strib ran a reporter-written article talking about the upcoming tournament, and the possibility of hosting. Nov 28th - the same reporter wrote about what happened in the tourney selection. Dec 2nd - he wrote about volleyball and Paula Gentil, since she was going down to play against Tennessee, where she might have played, if not for her visiting MN first. Woo freakin' hoo.

First of all Nebraskans aren't unlike other fans in that the sport needs to be doing reasonably well. But here is the main reason I feel for the continued and enthusiastic support once the sport proves itself. We all know about Nebraska not having any pro teams to follow but the main reason I think is the homegrown flavor. Our third biggest city has approximately 50000 people. So most of our homegrown athletes are coming from small communities. Houghteling, Busboom, Gates,Larson, and Smith all come from towns with less than 22000 a few with less than 2000. What happens is that when these athletes become "stars" the entire town follows them and treats them as such. If you checked out the roster of our past NC football teams you would see this also. It has started happening in baseball. In fact our entire starting pitching rotation was from Nebraska. And I see it happening in wrestling. The attendance numbers have gone up and I can't help but noticing how many Nebraskans are on the roster. (This is unusual for the program in the past) Nebraska is a small state and while you can make fun of our corn, unexciting landscape, cold and whatever, the fact of the matter is that when it comes to Nebraska athletics its a close knit state and thus fuels the success it has. can we make fun of the inbreeding?
