Congrats to all the final four teams this year, but the lack of the power programs in the final 4 is a direct result of the injury bug hitting teams early and often.
Hawaii: loses Mason and Hittle, neither fully recover.
Penn State: Harmatto.... can't deny they are one of the best teams with her, no depth = loss
Arizona: Abernathy should have been playing on her injured legs, but toughed it out anyway
USC: Gysin, no depth = (see penn state), also Seelhammer injury vs Cal definitely slowed her for following week. Sijelovig (sp) couldn't jump OR move. But it sounds like she was the only option. Also heard that Candelas was hampered.
Stanford: Poster child for injuries this year. Barboza AND Kehoe.... who could argue that this could have been a final 4 team???
Texas: No sure if anyone was injured, but they sure seem to suffer from choking each year anyway (is that an injury???)
Again congrats to Tennessee and Santa Clara for taking advantage of the situation presented before them.

Minnesota was playing with Gentil at 80% or less all season, however, they were a bit of a long shot from the start with going into the season trying to work 8 new players into their lineup(s). I'm already looking forward to season after a full off-season of training, practices, and playing together in the spring and summer.
Tennessee had their fair share of injuries this year as well. They simply managed to work their way around them in finding ways to successfully adjust and tweak their lineups down the stretch.
I thought I'd also heard that Santa Clara lost one of their starters for the season earlier this year. Though, perhaps that was last year or some other WCC team this year?

San Diego lost their top attacker Kristen Carlson to a torn ACL in an early match-up against Santa Clara. Last year, the Broncos lost middle blocker Annalisa Muratore, the WCC Freshman of the Year, to an injury and the coaching staff took their time bringing her along for this season.

Cmaylo was out for a stretch when SCU lost to USD and went 5 with Gonzaga, returned for their losses to Cal and StMarys (but not sure she was 100% then).

Illinois may no longer be a power program, but the Illini had their share of injuries throughout the season, losing Hynds (again) and with Virsilaite having hand problems all season. And what about Purdue. Penn State being zapped in the final weeks with the Harmotto injury was the end to their title run. Minnesota was very fortunate to stay injury free. Gentil was playing very well at the end of the season and into NCAA play. The loss to Bowman did not help Michigan's chances, but her replacement (Gay) played very well down the stretch. Overall - tough year of injuries in the B10.

At Texas, Leticia Armstrong was out for a couple of games toward the end of the season. Her injury was not explained. She did come back and play, but was didn't seem to be on top of her game after she came back (including against Hawaii). But, Jennifer Todd came in for her and did well at times. As in all sports, depth really makes the difference in the long haul, when it pertains to injuries.

On the Hawai'i v Texas video feed I could see a big brace on her knee.

Baylor fell due to the Injury Gorilla. Top OH blew ACL in August. MB ACL before the season. Top MB MCL first match of the season and out over half the season. Could have been a big year for the Bears. Now they lose 5 seniors and have a very good class coming in. They should be making some noise in about 2 years.

Minnesota was playing with Gentil at 80% or less all season, ... I would take that with a grain of salt. My daughter plays in the Big 10 and was telling me about Gentil. The players have huge respect for her ability, but they laugh about her "injuries". When she misses a dig or messes up a play, suddenly she is slow to get up and she is limping. When UM loses, they would hear how her leg was worse. Pretty much all the players are beat up and injured at this point. Gentil disn't look any worse than anybody else. As for Stanford, Barbosa would have been FOY and Kehoe is a prospect for the National Team. They would have been FF without the injuries. One reason I think UW is going to win it all is that they beat Stanford 3-0 when Stanford was still hot. Nebraska beat Stanford 3-0 in very close games when Barbosa hadn't hit her stride yet.

You obviously didn't see her playing much this year. Her movement was very much labored and slowed because of very painful scar tissue built up in her foot as a result of off season surgery. Even injured she played well, however, not at the same level that she had been in previous years and she had not completely recovered from her off season surgery. Just because a player plays as well or better than competitors doesn't equate to that player necessarily being totally healthy. She was still able to make some amazing digs, however, with her movement limited because of the scar tissue buildup she was not as able to get to a fair number of attacked balls that she had been in the past. Though certainly, Paula playing at 80% for the Gophers is a lot better than not having her play at all as was the case wht many other teams losing starters for the season this year.
