Was it back when Penn State and Long Beach were beating each other up?

I thought the 2003 USC v Florida match was pretty good but not necessarily great.
The 2000 Nebr v Wisc went 5 but Wisc was never close to having a match point so wasn't exactly a great match.
98 PSU v LBSU was great.
Last great match that decided the national champion though was in 99 PSU v UOP in the Semis.

So I don't think you can safely say that had UOP won against PSU that they would have beaten Stanford. Well, if Stanford played like they did in the finals against PSU, then anybody wouldve beaten them But in general, I disagree with that assumption.

Yeah, I think the last great championship match was that '98 Long Beach vs. Penn St. match. Man, that had the makings of a great match with Brandy Barrat's trash talking -- that supposedly was suppose to motivate Penn St. -- but then they found themselves in a 2-0 deficit, but picked their game up to make it a dramatic 5 game match. Man, I remember the fourth set when Long Beach ran out of subs and that game went back and forth until Penn St. eventually won -- only to be defeated in the fifth by Long Beach. That was a great match with some marquee players!!!

Even that 1998 match was pretty poor except for games 4 and 5 -- in terms of high quality of play on both sides. But that's pretty rare _anytime_. Nature of the beast, unfortunately.

PSU vs Beach. Great match, great players. There was extra drama in the fact Gimillaro made an ass of himself all week, in every possible press opportunity. The fans really got behind, PSU as Gimillaro made it nearly impossible to get behind the Beach.

I agree, except that it worked. He managed to convince his team they were being slighted and it lit a fire under them. Fans were against them, but they won the title.
Bad thing about it was I think Barrett ended up caught in the BG's crossfire.
OTOH, things have been a little rough for the program since then, even though they did get back to another championship. You reap what you sow?
Good thing was that I think the loss inspired PSU in 1999.
