I remember in 1999 when Hawaii was knocked out of the regional semi against Texas A&M. In the regional final, Texas A&M v. Long Beach State, there were still a number of fans that went, but the fans were all sort of confused. Do we root for Texas A&M who just knocked our team out of the tournament when we are hosting the Final Four? Or do we root for Long Beach State, who has been the Hawaii rival for the past decade? The Final Four in Hawaii also felt a bit strange. There was still a good number of people in the stands, but the Final Four was relatively quiet, even for a Hawaii crowd. Penn State, Long Beach, Stanford, and Pacific. It was hard to figure out who to root for.
I actually attended the Texas A &M/Long Beach State match and cheered for Melissa Ohta and the Beach. Texas A&M really but used all their bullets against Hawai'i and had nothing left for the 49ers. There were still a large number of Hawai'i fans at that particular match, even a couple of Wahine were in attendance but yes it did feel weird.
