Does anyone know if she has gotten the surgery for her knee? Also, when college athletes get surgery, does the university pick up the tab? I remember when the Wahine doctor passed away a couple of years ago, there was mention that he performed surgery for the team. Just curious how that works.

Yes, they pick up the bill. When you commit to a program you automatically are put on the school's insurance.
Furthermore, if the injury is career ending, the NCAA must pay for the remainder of the athletes education that would have been paid for by the scholarship. This allows the school to free up the scholarship w/o screwing over the athlete from an education. It used to be that the athlete would be #$@^ out of luck if they got hurt, but a lawsuit in the '80's changed that.

Thanks!
Apparently you're an Idaho fan so maybe you can answer me this... When I went to Wazzu I remember a girl that really impressed me in the '02 season, I think her name was McCaffrey(sp?) and the next year ('03) when they played us she wasn't there anymore. Did she transfer someplace? Because I was pretty sure she was only a freshman and I remember thinking they would be pretty good in the future.

The NCAA does not have to pay for anyone's surgery at anytime. The NCAA can grant the school a medical hardship, which allows the school to continue scholarshiping the essentially retired player, but gives them the scholarship back, to offer another player to replace her.

In a nutshell, the student-athlete's athletic department (not the NCAA) can pick up the tab for financial aid after a career ending injury. Many athletic departments have funds set aside for this. At that point, the scholarship would no longer count against that sport's limits. However, the student-athlete can never come back and play that sport again at that school (i.e. miracle recovery) unless the athletic dept is willing to make that SA a "counter" for all the time she received that medical hardship scholarship, which would either require they be under the limit each year, or an NCAA violation. They might allow for a waiver, but I'm not sure on what the standard might be.

Laura McCaffrey was a Sophmore in 2002 and was a very good player for UI with a lot of promise. She decided towards the end of that season that she didn't have the "love" for volleyball anymore and wanted to quit playing and go home to Colorado. The girls wished her the best and she left. She was well-liked.

Wasn't there talk about her needing surgery after she injured her knee earlier in the season?

Wasn't there talk about her needing surgery after she injured her knee earlier in the season? There is always speculation, here... I haven't heard any real "talk" about it.

I believe you're right, IB. I sort of recall it being mentioned by Jim and/or Chris on one of the telecasts that she might need off-season surgery, but nothing official that I can recall was put forth by the team/coaches/program/department that she was definitely having surgery.
