I just saw where Florida picked up a commit for 2008. While I'm glad she picked Florida, I think that's just way too early to commit. Florida still has a shot at getting another commit for 06, and while they are still recruiting for 07. Is this too early?

It's too early for both parties, imho. But they both go into it with their eyes wide open.
Plus, every situation is unique.

I really don’t like these early commitments. Right now, finalizing the 2006 commitments and starting to look at the 2007 commitments seem right. 2008 commitments are way too early. By time estimates, these girls are mid-way through their sophomore year of high school. They haven’t taken their SATs or anything yet. Too much can happen between their sophomore year and their senior year. In the same sense, too much can happen between now and the 2008 year for any school. Transfers and those who decide to leave the program create situations that can change the outlook for a season. The 2008 commitment that might seem like a need now, may not be needed when the time comes around.
I suppose it is sort of like an arms race. Those who have gone through the Youth and Junior national teams will be the highly sought after players. Coaches want to secure their commitments as soon as they can. But as I have noted before, I think this could lead to a lot of potential transfers.

If I knew the girls very well, then I would be opposed to these early commitments because I would, most likely, care for their well-being.
But since I do not know these girls, and that's true for 99% of the lot, I don't seem to care that much. It doesn't appear to be a pressing issue to me. I mean, I worry more about whether I can squeeze in another 10 seconds of footage when I'm creating a DVD than the horrors of early commits. In fact, just watching the carousel of girls as they switch from one school to another is kinda, in an incomprehinsibly bizarre way, somewhat entertaining and adds to the drama of an otherwise dull offseason.

Screaming out the name of your alma mater at the point of your child's conception is a little extreme for early commitment.
