I was watching when my team hit rock bottom, and you could hear the crickets chirping in RSF. The coaching staff realizes that and they've been rather good to me. I show up for every match I can reasonably attend. I haven't missed a regular season Cal match in the Bay Area since 1999. I've heard this Fall they're playing at Pacific, so I guess I'll have to expand my definition of "Bay Area". That meant every road appearance at Stanford, Santa Clara, San Jose State, St Mary's, or San Francisco. I've occasionally gotten some schwag. Lee Maes dumped a lot of his unused Cal clothing on me before he left (gobears got a bunch too). Some of it didn't fit me, but I passed it on to people who could wear it. He even put me on a gate list once at UC Irvine. The Cal team makes sure to wave to the crowd after every home match, win or lose. The free mini-VBs are a crowd favorite. I've gotten two, although one went to gobears for the "World's Cutest Grandaughter".

I like schools where the players randomly throw things into the crowd, since crowds are notorious for throwing random insults at the players.
What I DESPISE is when players at certain schools run close to the bench and deliberately toss their miniball/towel/shirt to mommy/boyfriend sitting on row two so they can later give the spirit item to a family member or boyfriend. Once or twice a season is expected - I understand very well wanting to express gratitude to the special people in your life who've made it possible for you to make it at the collegiate level. But any player who continually neglects to acknowledge and appreciate the fans who show up year after year, win or lose, eventually goes on my %*$#list. If a large number do it regularly, that team can kiss my consistent attendance and support goodbye for that season.
Personally, I buy my fan gear at U bookstore/pro shop or get 'em in the mail as a thank you for scholarship fund contributions, so I usually let other people stand up and yell and catch the souvenirs. Still it's the principle of the thing and a major peeve of mine.

AND.....I'm cool but I'm not from Ohio! I was actually gonna edit it to say that since you were cool you are an honorary Ohioan but I had to go to class...I'll edit it now. As for the list, there is actually a joke one on the internet...some UF basketball fan jokingly posted on a forum that since I wore that outfit she thinks I'm hot and that if anybody tries to get to me she's in line first. So people jokingly replied saying they wanted on the list...its over 100 people long last time I saw it...it was also a trend for UF basketball fans to take a picture with me.

And thats why I love Florida's team because they throw their balls to random people and devoted fans a lot...yep, I got a ball on senior day last season.

I rather like the gesture where's the object is tossed gently or handed to a random kid in the audience. I've come close to hurting myself in a sea of hands. However - I'm really there for the volleyball, so cheap trinkets aren't going to sway me one way or another.

I'm not a fair case in this regard, because I'm not a normal fan. At home games, I am actually considered media, but that was due to intervention from the coach, who got me a seat at the media bench with my laptop. Therefore, I can attest to feeling very appreciated. Moreover, my activities with the booster club (currently an officer on the board) make it so I have pretty good relationships with most of the players, too, so I really do feel to be part of the team. But I recognize I am not an average fan at Purdue. That being said, I do think that Purdue does a very good job showing appreciation to the fans, and Dave Shondell leads the way. For example, before the match, Dave tends to wander about the gym. Nominally, he is watching the teams warm up (including the opponents), but he tends to use it as an opportunity to mingle with fans as they come in the door, and he makes an effort to meet the fans and talk to them. He usually stops to see me, but I figure I bother him enough as it is, so he should spend his time talking to others. I've never had any problem with getting access to the coach (or any of the coaches, for that matter) anytime I want I must say that I, as a fan, certainly notice that he does this, and appreciate it a lot. He could always use the excuse that he is busy, but its great that he makes the effort to make the fans feel like they are important.

I think that teams should pay as much attention as possible to the fans.
