Clearly this team is a work in progress which how can it not be given losing 3 starters? The big keys will be the development of the middles along with Mancuso finding ways to contribute. I did not attend last night but noticed that Dani was not her joyful usual self on the court on Saturday. Anyone care to comment on her demeanor last night?? This could be a team that doesn't win the Big 12 but makes the final four. Barring anymore injuries they will only improve. The best news for Husker fans is after a long long wait we finally have a setter who can makes things happen!!

Mancuso did look more subdued last night than she last year. Wonder if it is a conscious decision on her part to dampen the exuberance? One would think she would be very excited about this season, knowing she has a huge role to play.
As stated by several others, the Huskers should not be #1 at this point. Too many question marks, most importantly how good Busboom will be at libero & how good the middles will be. The sometimes-shaky passing last night was disappointing, and it seems hard to believe that they could have become complacent in the 2nd & 3rd games, but that is what it looked like.

Unlike many Husker fans, I consider this a great start to the Husker season. No team in the country has lost as many quality athletes as the Huskers. When you lose 3 AAs you have to expect a period of transition. Along with that, the Huskers have a new setter and a new libero and these are not replacing the AAs that are gone. Last year the Huskers came out of the gate so fast that there was little room for improvement. This year, they will struggle early, but as they get comfortable with a new setter and all the other changes they will show huge improvement and be a force down the stretch. We sometimes tend to forget that the NCAA title run begins in late November, not in late August.

Mancuso looks nervous. I think she is feeling the pressure of starting and realizes that she has to produce when she is set. She needs to relax and just play the game. She is not expected to be Christina Houghtelling. Pavan and Larson will get the majority of the swings and the pressure lies with them, but given nature of the position, she will be expected to score when called upon, especially if the passing breaks down.

No one thought they could win in 2000??
Not sure that was true. There also weren't that many great teams that year -- and, as it was, NU almost lost to Wisconsin, which never should have happened.

The 2000 team was in the top ten when the season started and ended up number one about the third weekend of the season when everyone kept losing above them. They really won ugly the entire season.

One poignant thing from the match (and the scrimmage last Saturday) is that when the team throws out the volleyballs during introductions, Houghtelling gives hers to Mancuso to throw. Hotel was always able to toss it to the most distant seats, and Mancuso gets it to (almost) the same location. How symbolic of the situation.

No team in the country has lost as many quality athletes as the Huskers. Except maybe Washington. But don't worry, on October 18th the Huskers will get to follow in Washington's footsteps, so it will all come out even.

I think it's healthy for fans to get their fears, doubts, anxieties, insecurities, and phobias out in the open. More fans should follow the Husker Nation's example.

Recent Nebraska football teams have, perhaps, given their fans some humility! I couldn't agree with you more!! Fans have witnessed how quickly something great can unravel. That certainly isn't the case with the vb team but doom and gloom can certainly be heard from folks a lot sooner than you used to hear it about Husker teams.

The loss of Houghtelling's leadership and spirit on the court is far greater than the loss of her talent. They have enough talent to be a FF team (probably not Champion) but they have a few flatliners on the court. This team will need to find a spirit and identity.

Holloway"s energy, and athleticism reminds me of Nepo. FINALLY!!! A "Nepo-tism" I can get behind and support for the next 4 years.
