LONG BEACH - "Ay, ay, ay."
That was all coach Brian Gimmillaro could say from the bench as he watched his Long Beach State women's volleyball team drop its first match of the season to Oregon 3-1 at the Walter Pyramid on Wednesday night.
The Ducks won 30-16, 24-30, 30-24 and 30-22 in a nonconference match to remain undefeated.
"This was a big win," said Oregon coach Jim Moore, a 1980 LBSU alumnus. "I told my players that the difference after game one was that they thought they would win, and we have to win."
The 49 ers (3-1) got off to a slow start dropping the first set 30-16.
Several mistakes forced them to record a negative hitting percentage, -.056 in the game. The Ducks also out-blocked the 49ers 8-0, while executing 10 kills on 28 total attempts for an attack percentage of .250.
"You can't hit the ball late," Gimmillaro said. "You have to hit it early because if you hit it late you're going to pay. We were late all night long. We weren't very good."
LBSU cam e on strong in the second game jumping out to an early lead and held onto it for most the set. The Ducks closed the gap 14-11 thanks to the offensive play of Mira Djuric.
But Mariko Crum and Naomi Washington closed the set with kills to give the game to the 49ers 30-26.
The Ducks (3-1) took a 2-1 lead in the match taking the third game. The 49ers looked in control early leading 10-6.
But the Ducks tied at 12 and took control of the game after th at, led by freshman Neticia Enesi's five kills. The 49ers roared back to pull to 22-20, but the Ducks went on an 8-4 run to win the set.
In the fourth game, Oregon pulled away mostly on errors committed by the 49ers to close the frame 30-22.
"We played poorly," Gimmillaro said. "We didn't play aggressive like I thought we would, and they were a lot better than us."
