Not in the first one of the season they don't. Well, yeah, but the thing about the polls is that everything is speculation... Right, so when thinking about the first polls, you are just playing the game of guessing what people are speculating. Now with the first Pablo, it's purely about the results of the first two weeks. Actually, we could be watching with the AVCA polls in mind as well. The biggest difference in any two AVCA polls is between the preseason poll and the first after the start of the season. This difference is a lot larger even between the last poll of last year and this year's preseason version. Who's number 1 in the AVCA? Texas? Or Penn St? Or Nebraska? Remember, the AVCA poll is 1) where were you last week, and 2) penalize for losses. There is SOME reward, but it is generally not large. But that's more appropriate for another thread.

I'm not sure the AVCA groupthink is ready to put Texas in the #1 slot. Their performance this weekend, and the performance of common opponents, may change that, but they will probably have to put in a few more weeks of wins (while other teams lose) before the voting aggregate would produce someone other than one of the usual suspects at the top. And Magee's ACL tear will make voters even more skittish.
Other things being equal, Texas will move up to 4-5 Monday and maybe get a #1 vote or two as long as they win against Pepperdine. If they sweep strongly, they may go higher.
If they can win out against Santa Clara/Penn State next week even without Magee, we will see them get many more first place votes if not move into first place itself.

They don't. They were ranked #1.
As for Pablo, I want to see Utah ranked top 15, dammit!

After a weekend of competition I wanted to revive this thread. I think Pablo's #1 will be Nebraska. They haven't lost a game, and their opponents' Pablo rankings from last year are all pretty good. (Checking out what the opponents have actually done is more effort than I want to put into this. ) If Pablo likes sweeps as much as people say, they're in a good position. But a look at the other undefeated teams shows a few surprises. -- Santa Clara: A real possibility for #1. All sweeps. Their opponents have lower Pablo ranks, but may be having better pre-seasons than Nebraska's. -- UCLA: dropped one game. Record includes a sweep of Florida. -- California swept everyone. I expect to see them below Nebraska because the opponents are softer. -- BYU: Mostly sweeps. Dropped one game, but in a win over Stanford that can be excused. -- Penn State: Mostly they've swept opponents. Likely to be dragged down by a five-game match against LSU. -- UConn: All sweeps, though the best opponent was Portland State. Cool tidbit of the day: I didn't realize Michigan and Michigan state are both undefeated. And they're not scheduled to play each other! I thought there was a cross-state rivalry or something? (Update: Sorry, I looked right at their schedules and misread them. )

Michigan and Michigan State are both in the Big Ten conference and will play each other twice, once at Michigan and once at Michigan State.

I'd throw Michigan into the mix of possibilities. UCLA has a very good win over Florida, but I don't know how strong that side of the schedule is going to look right now. Cal Poly's win over Texas helps UCLA, probably, because it makes Hawaii, who is pretty much equivalent to Cal Poly based on Pepperdine results, look better. BYU's win over Stanford will probably serve more to hurt stanford than to help BYU, as UCSB doesn't have enough strength to hold them up. Santa Clara's only real strong win I think was against Kansas St. I don't see Notre Dame as being all that overwhelming right now. I am leaning toward Nebraska, but note that based on results against common opponents, Michigan and Nebraska should be very close. Don't be surprised if Michigan sits near the top.
