49ers Beat Saint Mary's In Five Games
Five Players Hit Double-Digits In Kills

LINCOLN, NE-- Five players recorded double-digits in kills and defensively Long Beach State recorded 100 digs as the 49ers out-lasted Saint Mary's College in five games Saturday afternoon at the Nebraska Invitational. The 49ers prevailed 22-30, 30-25, 30-22, 28-30, 15-7 to improve to 5-1 on the season. Saint Mary's fell to 3-2 with the loss.
Naomi Washington recorded a career-high 20 kills to lead the 49er offensive attack. Long Beach hit .248 for the match (83-32-206) with a season-high 83 kills. Quincy Verdin added 16 kills, while hitting .312, Robin Miramontes had a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs, Alexis Crimes had 14 kills and six blocks and Michaela Hasilakova had 13 kills while hitting .310.
Defensively the 49ers recorded 100 digs, a mark which ranks No. 8 all-time in school single match history. Libero Iris Murray had a career-high 29 digs, the fourth-best single game mark in school history. Cynthia Buggs added 14 digs, and setter Nicole Vargas recorded 69 assists and 13 digs for her first double-double of the year.
In game five the 49ers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after three consecutive hitting errors by the Gaels Lauren Holland. The Beach upped the advantage to 7-2 after a Buggs ace. SMC scored to pull to within 7-3, but the 49ers then ran off four consecutive points, including three points on kills by Verdin, to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
Long Beach State could not withstand a Gaels scoring run in game one, and fell 30-22. St. Mary's unlocked a 12-12 tie and bulit a 20-15 advantage after a 49er attack error. A Washington kill later in the set cut the lead to 21-17, before SMC went on a 5-2 run to extend its lead to 26-19, courtesy of a Missie Stidham kill. Washington was the lone bright spot for the 49ers, registering six kills in the stanza.
The 49ers respnded in the second frame with more offensive firepower to come away with the 30-25 victory. Quincy Verdin and Crimes sparked the 49er rally, as Verdin registered five kills to raise her match total to seven. Crimes meanwhile served eight straight points for The Beach early in the game to aid in the 19-12 lead. LBSU improved its defense as well, recording nine blocks and limiting the Gaels to just a .130 attack percentage.
