After seeing the Huskers play this week, here are some observations so far.
Larson: Seems to be much improved in many areas. Has one of the best, if not the best serve in the NCAA. Passes very well and plays very good defense. Her blocking is much improved. Attacks well and will be asked to carry more of a load with the loss of Houghtelling. Terrific all-round game.
Mancuso: Confidence seems to be an issue. Scared to make mistakes, so tries hard to be careful, and thus makes errors. If she just plays, she will be a very valuable contributor to this team. Not asked to carry a big offensive load, but must produce when called upon.
Stalls: A great start to the season. Offensively, playing as well as she has since she arrived in Lincoln. A real threat to score at any time. If she continues playing like this, could be an AA. A huge bonus for the Huskers.
Gates: Very steady. Not asked to do a lot offensively yet, but as the season goes on she could be called upon to produce more. Blocks beside Pavan, so she should have some good blocking stats this year. Not expected to be Melissa Elmer, but is holding her own very nicely.
Pavan: The offensive workhorse. When the team needs a point, this is who they look to. Starting to get very comfortable with Holloway. Hits as well out of the backcourt as she does from the front. Puts up a huge block on the right side which helps set up a very good defense. I predict that she will have her best year as a Husker this year.
Holloway: Runs a terrific offense. Has the intangibles (leadership, swagger, etc.) that you look for in a setter. Runs the middle as well as any setter has since John Cook has been at Nebraska. If she stays healthy, she will re-write the setting record books at Nebraska.
Busboom: If Cook new then what he know now, Busboom may have been a libero a long time ago. Has good defensive instincts. In her short time in the position, she has developed into an excellent libero. Her passing is better than anyone thought it would be and will only get better as the season progresses.
Shwartz: A pleasant surprise. Comes in for Mancuso and passes very well and plays great defense also. For someone who did not play much last year, she has come in and made an impact.
Griffin: The best second setter in the country. She saw limited time this weekend, but did a great job when she did come in. She does not have the same presence as Holloway, but is fully capable of stepping in and doing the job.
Cooper: Will challenge Gates for the second middle position before the end of the season. She doesn't play like a freshman. A huge talent that will make her mark.
