Sep. 05– The Concordia Television Production crew under the supervision of Zach Schuster will provide video streaming for all home Concordia volleyball games. Students from campus will provide all the ation live throughout the season.. The Bears will host St. Cloud State tonight at 7:00 in the Gangelhoff Center. The Skinny ... The Golden Bears are 7-1 on the season with a 4-1 record against teams ranked in the AVCA Top 25. CU began the season by sweeping the Nova Southeastern Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with three game sweeps over #3 Truman, Barry and Fort Hays State before a five game win over #16 Florida Gulf Coast. They followed that up by taking three of four matches at the Denver Premier Tournament, sweeping #10 Central Missouri State and Regis before a five game loss to #2 Tampa before another sweep of #7 Washburn.
About Concordia ... The Bears were picked as NSIC preseason favorites after winning three straight conference titles. The Bears only loss this season was a five game match to #2 Tampa, who defeated the Bears in the NCAA Elite Eight Tournament last season. Six of CU?s seven wins have been three game sweeps. They are led by the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year, Jessica Lucia. Lucia, a senior, is second on the team averaging 4.25 kills and is third with 2.50 digs and 1.04 blocks per game. Her 13 service aces lead the team and she is hitting .266 on the season. Senior Kelsey Kyro earned MVP honors at the Denver Premier Tournament and leads CU with 4.50 kills per game and is hitting .407 on the season. Kyro is also second on the team with 1.39 blocks per game. Freshman Maggie McNamara has been outstanding at the setter position, averaging 14.68 assists per game and 2.29 digs per game. She has also recorded 19 total blocks. Sophomore Maria Steinhagen has a team-best 1.54 blocks per game while senior Megan Graham averages a team-high 4.68 digs.
About St. Cloud State ... The Huskies are 2-7 on the year after dropping four straight matches last weekend to Northern State, Dickinson State, MSU Moorhead and Univ. of Mary (N.D.) at the UND Northern Extreme Crossover. SCSU is led by Lindsey Gothe and her 3.56 kills per game. Gothe hits at a .211 clip and averages 2.92 digs. Kristi Pangrac averages 3.17 kills and hits a team-high .307. The Huskies setter is Sierra Nowak, averaging 11.47 assists per game. The Huskies are hitting .201 as a team while opponents hit .244 against them.
The Starkey File ... Head Coach Brady Starkey (101-13, 43-1 NSIC) earned North Central Regional Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his career last season and is a two-time NSIC Coach of the Year ... his squad set school records in wins (32) in 2003 and 2004, NSIC wins (15) and winning streak (21) in 2003 ... he was the only first-year coach in the Elite Eight NCAA Tournament in 2003 when he guided CU to the national championship match. The Bears went back to the Elite Eight last year after winning their second North Central Regional Tournament in three trips to the regional championship match.
Starkey vs. SCSU ... Brady Starkey is 4-0 against St. Cloud State in three seasons. Last season, the Bears won 3-0 at home. Jessica Lucia led the team with 17 kills and 10 digs while Kesley Kyro and Valerie Olson added 15 and 14, respectively. Cailin Terhaar had 47 assists while Megan Graham and Ashley Olson each posted 12 digs. Monica McNamara hit .556 in nine attacks while Kyro hit .522 in 23 attacks as CU hit .289 as a team and held SCSU to .098.
No. 4 in the Nation ... The Golden Bears began the season ranked #4 in the AVCA/CSTV Preseason Top-25 Poll and are the only NSIC team ranked in the poll.
