No. 18 Waves Aim to Build on Successful Weekend Pepperdine heads to Golden Bear Invitational this weekend.
The 18th-ranked Pepperdine women's volleyball team is riding a two-match win streak into this weekend's Golden Bear Invitational at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. After gaining a share of the Asics Classic title last weekend, the Waves are looking to continue picking up victories during a two-week stretch which will see Pepperdine face three teams ranked inside the top 15.
The margin for error will be small between now and the West Coast Conference opener on Thurs., Sept. 28 against Gonzaga, but she also knows this year's squad is special.
"When we pass well, we are a good team," says head coach Nina Matthies. "We need to shore up a few things and work on being more consistent. The team needs to find its rhythm, which I feel like it started to in the last three games against Cal Poly. With four newcomers on the floor everything is new right now."
The Waves have already played three five-game matches this season and could be looking at a 4-1 record had they been able to close out the first two matches of the season at then-No. 7 Hawaii. In the final match of last weekend's tournament, Pepperdine rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Cal Poly in a sign that maybe the team is starting to gel and learning how to win.
Pepperdine is scheduled to face American (4-2) Friday night at 4:30 p.m. (PDT). On Saturday, the Waves will face Colorado State (4-2) at noon before wrapping up the tournament against No. 13 Cal (6-0) at 7:30 p.m.

Pepp needs to beat Cal this weekend in order to be taken seriously by the better teams.

Interesting item of note from the Cal press release for this weekend's tourney. Head Coach, Nina Matthies' son, is a star on the Cal Men's water polo team...so I guess she has been around here... and just outside Haas,.... a number of times over the past 4 years....watching her son in the pool.
And, Cal needs to beat Pepperdine (and CSU and American) to go along with the 6-0 record so far....

If there ever was a drier (pun intended) sport to watch on the telly, water polo is it. A bunch of unrecognizable men with bathing caps on, flailing and splashing like some urban kids around a summer fire hydrant. I'd rather watch some paint dry...... and dry.....and flake......

why is it golden bears i haven't seen any golden bears anywhere around there and they haven't won any gold medals in the bears olympix i didn't even see any golden bear artifacts that were found by archeologists or by ppl who dug for gold in the gold rush this is erroneous there are no golden bears
pepp has to win to gain confidence in themselves and continue the momentum they gained so far by knowing that they could 'hang' w/the top ranked teams is not enuff not w/nina as their coach they have to win against cal to cross them off their list of good legit teams so far they're 2-1 (cal poly is a good legit team)
i would pay money to watch ye watch paint dry..... and flake there would no other entertainment that could rival this xcept for a couple of things that escapes my thought rite now muaaahahaha this is high level entertainment if this happens it'd be money

Grizzlies can vary in color from yellowish to dark brown. The following grizzly tends towards yellow, so I guess it could be considered a "golden bear".
While maybe the "bears olympix" haven't yielded any results, at least Cal has had a few successes in the Summer Olmypics. Natalie Couglin did pretty well, and Duje Draganja even won several medals (including a gold) while sporting his Cal swim cap.

natalie coughlin rox i met her at the olympic training center when i was doing research on elite athletes w/c was also part of my paid internship when i was a pepp stud(ent) she is truly a wonderful person and a fierce competitor it's what makes her excel in what she does i'm sure she'll win another gold at the world championships nxt month and hopefully at the olympix in '08
