LONG BEACH - Four days after losing to the top-ranked squad in the country, the Long Beach State volleyball team returns to friendlier hardwood tonight when it plays host to Saint Mary's in a 7:30 match in the Walter Pyramid.
The 49ers dropped to 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Lincoln after being swept by the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Tonight's opponent is a club that the 49ers know more than just a little bit about: Long Beach beat the Gaels in five games Saturday in Lincoln.
"Saint Mary's is a solid and very well-coached team," LBSU Coach Brian Gimmillaro said.
The Gaels are 3-3 after falling to Nebraska (3-0) and then the 49ers and Middle Tennessee State in five games apiece in Lincoln.
"(Uniform) No. 2 (outside hitter Missie Stidam) and their setter (Mandy Bible) are good players," Gimmillaro said of players that had 15 kills (Stidam) and 57 assists (Bible) in the 22-30, 30-25, 30-22, 28-30 and 15-7 loss to the 49ers.
Junior middle blocker Alexis Crimes and classmate Iris Murray, a junior libero, were all-tournament selections for Long Beach last weekend.
The 49ers were handled in Game 1 (30-15) but recovered to play well in large stretches of Games 2 (31-29) and 3 (30-25) against Nebraska.
"I thought we had a chance to win two of those games," Gimmillaro said. "Both teams played at a pretty good level but we're just going to have to play much more consistently (well)."
Long Beach is back in action in the Walter Pyramid Saturday night at 7 o'clock to take on the University of Idaho Vandals, a former Big West Conference member now playing in the Western Athletic Conference.
