Needs to happen more often. I'm watching Washington against North Dakota St. (huskies up -19 -15) and former husky vball player Carolyn Farney is doing color commentator and it is awesome when she gets a word in. She graduated last year and never got to play much, but being so recently on the team she knows everything about the players strengths and weaknesses right now. She gives details about set plays and why they would run them against NDSU's defense as the match progresses, and a hitters perspective when going up against certain blocks and situations.
Not only that, but in transition she's called exactly where Courtney is gonna go just by seeing where each one of the hitter is at on the court and what their situation is. I've learned a lot.
We need more of these and less 'phenomenal' guys doing color. I know Nebraska is doing that now unless I'm mistaken. Any other schools do this? I'd listen to them if they do.

Florida has former setter Missy Whitemore(Aggert) doing color commentary for their home matches. She does a pretty good job of explaining things, even if her predictions out of timeouts are off(ie, who will Florida go to after a timeout when they need a kill). I don't get to listen to her much, since I'm at the matches, but she does an adequate job. I think keeps Tom calm, as well. He's much more animated when he's working alone.

Hey pedro, was this on TV out your way or were you at the match? If it was on TV, I'd be interested in getting a copy of the match. I'm always up for 'learning something new' and based on your description of Carolyn's commentary, it sounds like something I'd enjoy adding to my current library. Drop me an IM and let me know, ok? Thanks!

Holly McPeak was working most FSN Pac-10 gigs last season.

Yeah I know Cox and McPeak were players, but in this situation, Farney was playing with them just last June in China, so she knew what she was talking about when it came to washington's offense/defense and its players.
McPeak doesn't know how to announce really, but she's not stupid about the game. Cox on the other hand... she had her moments I guess?

Thanks pedro, is that a pay-per-view site or free? I'm definitely interested in hearing Carolyn's insight into the team and how/why they're doing the things they are on the court.

Actually, the ND State game is still available. Go to www.gohuskies.com, select Multimedia, and look at past games under Volleyball. It is free, but it does require you to sign in. I'm listening to the match right now. Carolyn does tell us a lot about the how the Huskies play, and that's just what you want in a color commentator. The one thing is that some times they get into nothing but color. And they just said she'll be doing color for the whole season.

Lindsey Wischemeir (last name spelled wrong) is doing some color this year. She graduated in 2002. Been coaching the last 3 years. She was awesome to listen to for the exact reasons you've pointed out. Unfortunately, she also told Baylor that if another coaching opportunity arises she will probably take it. She is currently the Director of Volleyball Operations for NU, which I think would be an awesome job! But she is a coach and foremost.

Now that I think of it, last year Cal had two former players doing video play-by-play and commentary for paid (and occasionally free) internet streaming. I didn't watch since I was always there. The announcers were Camille Leffall and Julie Fouts. Camille did make 2nd team AA the year before, and Julie was a freshman walk-on setter the season before.

McPeak doesn't know how to announce really.... The only reason she has the gig is because her husband owns the AVP Tour. She is terrble as an announcer. Star JOnes meets Katie Couric.
