Sophomore Jessica Gysin led No. 10 USC with 14 kills Saturday as the Women of Troy improved to 9-0 with the 3-0 sweep of St. John's.
LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/St. Francis HS) hit a team-high 14 kills with a .406 hitting day (14-1-32) Saturday as the No. 10 USC Women of Troy swept the St. John's Red Storm, 3-0 (30-22, 30-17, 30-20), at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
USC (9-0) has now recorded seven 3-0 sweeps this season with six of them on the road or a neutral site. The team was probably happier with this sweep which would allow them to catch its 2 p.m. flight after the 11 a.m. Eastern start in Columbia.
St. John's (9-1) suffered its first loss of the season and finished with a 2-1 record in the tournament.
Junior Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) added 10 kills and five block assists for the Women of Troy. Kaczor was named to the Gamecock Invitational All-Tournament team and named tournament MVP. It was the second time this season that Kaczor earned MVP honors.
This season, Kaczor has a 5.38 points-per-game average with a 4.69 kills-per-game average.
Junior Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) had eight kills and no errors for a .400 day (8-0-20) and was also named to the all-tournament team while senior All-America libero Debora Seilhamer was named outstanding libero for the tournament.
Freshman setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had 40 assists for USC, posting 121 for the tournament (13.44 apg).
At 12-12 in the first game, USC pulled away with seven straight points on Gysin's serve. Three straight blocks by the Women of Troy keyed the way on the way to the first game win.
The Women of Troy pulled away again with a 12-11 lead in game two, using an 18-6 run to close out the game.
USC plays at Pepperdine on Thursday (Sept. 14) in a 7 p.m. match that will be broadcast on ESPNU.
