(Although some will probably read into this as an anti-UH thread, it truly and honestly isn't meant to be in anyway. I really don't know how it could be construed as such but I've learned to 'qualify' is the way to go lately.)
Is she really eligible for redshirting this year?
She obviously can't do a regular redshirt; which she still has available to her, since she's played this year.
So therefore her only chance is a medical redshirt. But aren't these meant for players that have season ending injuries early in the season? Although UH hasn't yet reached the # matches after which a medical redshirt is no longer available, is Kamana'o's injury of the type that would normally be awarded a medical redshirt? If she played tonight, then it doesn't seem to necessarily fall in the category of a season-ending injury.
Someone who has a sprained ankle (perhaps not a third degree sprain) at the beginning of the season would be very unlikely to receive a medical redshirt. (I realize her injury is apparently much more serious than a sprained ankle.)
Just wondering what the primary condition that is used in determining what type of injuries make a player eligible for a medical redshirt.
Or is it simply an automatic thing; verify the injury exists and therefore grant the medical redshirt?
(Fully understand HIPPA prohibits UH from divulging the nature/extent of the injury so not trying to pry into her protected rights either.)

I've seen this thing several times in many sports. It's not instant and requires a petition to the NCAA. There are some injuries that will be almost a no-brainer like an ACL or broken bones. If it's something like a sprained ankle or something that someone can reasonably be expected to be healed by the end of the season, then I don't see it being granted.

I don't think anyone should conceive this as an 'anti-Hawaii' thread. I think it's a good question.
It requires a petition, as BC says to the NCAA. If the injury is significant enough in the eyes of the NC2As, then, she may be granted a medical redshirt. We'll have to wait and see, but you won't know until AFTER it happens, because of the HIPPA ruling.

You know I understand the logic behind the new policy, but one negative thing I've noticed is that it just leads to a lot more rumors. At least with the prior policy we would know for sure and there wouldn't be all this wild speculation.

So, in order for Kanoe to get a medical redshirt, she has to petition the NCAA? How quick is that? I mean, by the time they tell her if she qualifies for a medical redshirt will the season be over? That would be a terrible way for her to end her career at UH.

Typically, the injury one gets to get a medical redshirt would be one that would mean the season is over.

If they're serious about it and she really is better off shutting it down for the season, then I don't see any reason why the petition can't be made now and granted quickly. Oh - I missed the part where the hardship waiver request can be made to the conference. I don't know how often the NCAA committees meet, although I'd guess the WAC has their own procedures for these requests that could mean an expedited review.

Well, the article in the paper this morning, KK says that she is 90% and will play next weekend. Who really knows though, she certainly didn't look well last night.
It appears Hittle is the one that Shoji is seriously considering a redshirt for.

If you ask me, I think they should relegate Kanoe as a backrow specialist (since she played libero for the Jr. National Team), and make Cayley set. I think Cayley is doing a good job. Her dumps seem to be more effective than Kanoe's and that's what we need at crucial times. An offensive setter. She might not be as fast as Kanoe, but then again not many are. Maybe than Dave can stabalize the passing, which would allow the hitters to concentrate on attacking than passing. Other than that, the team just needs time to bond. Get use to each others tendencies. Hopefully towards the end of the season, they'll be able to put it all together. Once again, this is just my opinion. I wish the Wahine the best of luck.

Your suggestion is the same suggestion I made after watching the first matches against Pepperdine. But I also believe Shoji just doesn't have it in him to move Kamanao to libero. I hope he does, but I have no reason to believe he will.

You wouldn't think, but as 2c has pointed out, whenever talking about Hawaii, its really best to make it crystal clear right away...for the more paranoid Wahine. Has this been an ongoing thing with KK? I guess I didn't realize she was hurt until this year. In other words, is it a nagging career injury, like with Tracy Stalls knees?
