Vandals No Threat for LBSU
49ers Sweep Idaho for 7th Win of the Season
September 9, 2006
LONG BEACH, CA – Junior Alexis Crimes had 15 kills and hit .417 to lift the Long Beach State women’s volleyball to a sweep over Idaho on Saturday night from the Walter Pyramid. Game scores were 30-23, 30-19, 30-15.
Long Beach State improved to 7-2 on the season, while Idaho remained winless at 0-8. The 49ers are now 16-0 all-time vs. the Vandals.
“We’re still making a lot of mistakes out of anxiousness,” said 49ers head coach Brian Gimmillaro. “Iris played pretty well, and Alexis was more like herself tonight. Quincy is also hitting exceptionally hard.”
Sophomore Quincy Verdin added 10 kills and hit .364 with a career-high five blocks. Sophomore Nicole Vargas registered her fourth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 10 digs. Junior Iris Murray added a match-best 16 digs to highlight the top statistical leaders for The Beach. Amanda Bowman had eight kills in the losing effort for Idaho.
Long Beach State jumped on Idaho early in game one and built a 6-0 lead after a Crimes kill. After an Idaho scoring run tied the game at 7-7, LBSU found some separation midway thru the game and built a 21-15 lead after another Crimes kill. The Vandals got close one more time, and trimmed the 49er lead to 24-23, before LB closed out Idaho with a 6-0 scoring run and the 30-23 victory.
The 49ers unlocked a 12-12 tie in the second stanza with a 5-1 to take a 17-13 advantage, courtesy of a Verdin kill, and continued to pull away from that point on to win the set, 30-19. The Long Beach State defense limited the Vandals to a .000 hitting percentage in the game as well.
Holding a 16-11 advantage in the third game, the 49ers overwhelmed Idaho by scoring 12 of the next 13 points to take a 28-12 lead. LB won the game 30-15.
Long Beach State hosts UNLV on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 from the Walter Pyramid.
